power steering leak

Can anybody point me somewhere to find this darn leak? I replaced the O ring thinking that's the typical place to leak. Put in a new one filled the reservoir and is still leaking. WHen I originally found it, the soft covering on one of the hoses was soaked and basically just falling off so I removed it. I suppose that was to protect the hose from heat or...anyway here are a few pics...seems most of the fluid is around the (tell me that's an injector) on the right front. But am getting little puddles at the base of the manifold. I just can't see where it's coming from...Should I replace the whole unit? Anything would be appreciated. 4 pics attached. Thanks

Re: power steering leak

It's probably the high pressure steering line. That's the one that was covered by the soft foam tube.

To get a new hose from Subaru, it's about $100. You can look for a used one, but it's going to be just about as old as yours...

I recommend taking the hose off and taking it to a shop to rebuild it. Some auto parts stores will do this, otherwise look for a place that services heavy equipment (back hoes) or snow plows. This should cost about $30, they'll reuse the metal ends and replace the high pressure tubing. They may even be able to add a sleeve to replace the foam one.

Re: power steering leak

Hocrest, Is there a way to confirm it's the hose? Maybe if I start the car and have somebody turn the wheel, might I see some fluid being squirted from the hose? I would think yes...haven't taken the time to do that yet...Thanks

Re: power steering leak

Mine is doing the same thing. And at the meet I just went to, both mine and one of Earls had the same symptoms. We did confirm that it was the hose, and the fix seems to be either buy a new one, or have a shop fix it. Put your finger on the bottom of the hose, where it goes from the metal crimp, to the hose, if your finger gets covered in fluid, its the hose. I plan on just getting a new one from Subaru, might as well. It doesnt look like its hard to replace it. -Dennis

Re: power steering leak

Like Hocrest recommended, I took my hose to a local hydraulic/fuel and brake line shop and, for $38.00, got a new hose and connectors. Only downside was the car being out of service for the week for them to get parts and fabricate.
