Did myself in, sorta...

So Saturday afternoon, late, I was coming back from the market and decided to take the car in for an oil change, which was a hundred miles or so overdue. Waited in the left-turn lane for the light to change to turn into the shop. Traffic pulled out, and I started the turn, when out of the setting sun came this Saab. Crunch. I hit the middle of her left door. No injuries, except to egos. Relatively little damage to the SVX, more to the Saab. See pictures attached.
So, I need a left corner light and a bumper cover. Corner light right away, I'll let the body shop eventually worry about the bumper cover. The workshop where I take the car for minor work has a body shop attached, he gave me an estimate of $1,100 for the fix.
Bah humbug!
Paul

Noooooooo! Not the SVX!!!! There are too damn few of these cars in Southern California!!

On the other hand, it's rather funny how little damage there is to your car and how massive the damage is to the Saab. Hurr hurr.

These darn SVXii are built like tanks, apparently. Someone at the barracks parking lot backed into my rear bumper with her mazda hatchback a few weeks ago. It only left a tiny crease/bump in the back left bumper, where-as her back left bumper is dimpled in about 4 inches deep and 8 inches diameter.

I felt a bit better after that. I've only seen a few pictures of totaled SVXii. Mostly just cuts and bruises

That kind of damage seems like there's little to no damage to the bumper support beam underneath. The cover should be able to be found relatively inexpensive.

If you took the bumper off yourself (which is relatively easy) I'm sure you can get it repainted locally for 500 or less. It's essentially just sanding and respraying the bumper, but also paint matching. The corner light you can just replace yourself. Even if you do have someone do it, $1100 is on the high side.

Good that there wasn't anybody hurt. Also glad that the SVX was not hurt more than it was. It could have been a lot worst.

Is insurance covering this? Looking at the damage to the Saab, I'm assuming you have more to worry about than the $1100 SVX repair.

If your insurance is already paying to repair the Saab, you've already taken the hit on your record with them so they might as well foot the bill for the SVX too. Take it to the best body shop in town and get it taken care of asap.

Glad to hear no one was hurt.

Looks like that Saab lost.

Best of luck with insurance. I hope you take it to a reputable shop and have it fixed properly.

i have to agree that the svxs are tanks
hardly take any beatings from other cars

i park in my driveway (closest to the street) and one day my dad was backing out of the garage, pretty quickly, and he forgot i was parked there
when he told me he hit my car i was pretty upset...until i looked at it
all he did was crack the license plate cover, whereas his back bumper looked like someone hammered it in

Talked with insurance...

There's some hangups, so I'm going to just get a corner light to replace the one I've got, and then sand and prime the bumper until the details get sorted. Both parties are insured with the same company, so there's even MORE paperwork to go through.

Anybody got a LH corner light for sale?

Paul

SVX: Built like tank. Strong like tank. Heavy like tank. *grunt*

You're all fine and the SVX will stay on the road, that's all that matters.
