Unhappy Why should I keep my SVX

I have a 92 lsl that is giving me problems and I have already posted my questions on the forum. Obviously I am dying to drive it because of what I heard about it but am getting annoyed at the car. I already have a alfa 164L, beautiful white auto. Aftermarket wheels, leather interior etc. Then I also have an 86 maserati 425 biturbo liquid intercooled. Beautiful porsche metallic burgundy, real euro black and grey leather interior and oz racing wheels(car currently being fixed). This is the question. If I keep the sub will it outshine these cars in every respect? the maserati is obviously much faster, twin turbos etc. I have to sell one car but wondering which one. Which 2 would you keep?

Keep the SVX

Saracene,
I also have an Alfa 164L. I just got my SVX last week, and am starting to work on it to bring it to somewhere near the condition of the Alfa. I also have a third car, a convertible like your Maser, but my (Italian) mechanic told me that if I got a biturbo, he wouldn't work on it. The 164 has 95,000 miles on it, and is all original with a few local and club concours trophies. The convertible is an Australian-built Mercury Capri with 105,000 miles on it and a delight to drive. (I just took it on a 600 mile round trip to Monterey and the Pebble Beach weekend. I would have taken the SVX, but I had brought it home the preceding Monday with no A/C and other issues. Took it into the shop the day I got back, and had all fluids changed. They also said the brakes were low, so I had the discs re-surfaced and new pads all around. Then checked out the A/C, and after replacing an O-ring, it is holding charge and cooling wonderfully. It has 152,000 miles on it, and is suffering from sun-baked damage, but it spent most of its life in the high desert, so there is no rust, and the baked paint can be polished out.
Now, I'm going to enjoy it.
Oh, yeah, I write about cars for a living, and I drove a NEW SVX back in the day and fell in love. My bank account said no, however. So now I have one that I can afford.

why should i keep my svx

Hey Paul
Good to know there is an alfisti on the svx forum. I actually brought mine on ebay last august. Took the greyhound from phoenix to huntington beach. Met the seller. It was stored(he had moved to nevada) drove it back to phoenix, and what a drive. The car was so smooth with a lot of power. I loved the drive back. As regards the maser, I am facing a major problem here as well. No one wants to work on it. As soon as they hear maserati, its like I have mentioned the anti christ. No one wants to touch it. So I am stuck with fixing it myself. Doesn't help when you are unemployed and have no money, but I just love my italian cars. I was brought up in england and my first car was an alfasud, so very difficult for me to part from my italian cars.

Hello sir,

I cannot offer my sympathies as far as having too many cars to drive. I am mearly a 19 year old, who's second car is fortunate enough to be an SVX, partially through sheer luck. But that's another story...

I CAN however, offer my ideas on the subject seeing as how I not only love cars, but am around some PRETTY damn nice ones every day. My parents are rather well off, and my father owns some fun cars, including 3 corvettes (a '59, 69, and 07), among other things.

I have to say the ONLY reason I ever even desire to take another car other than the SVX out is the stick shift in 2 of the corvette's. And that's a personal preference, I don't feel in control of a car if I'm not shifting it. I can say I like the stares I get in the SVX MORE than the stares I get in any of the vette's. This is because the stares I get in the Vette's are those of envy, whereas those I get in the Subie are of confusion. I love the idea of people not knowing what I'm driving, BEFORE they can even envy my car.

Just my 2 cents though...

I would keep the SVX and the Alfa if I was in your shoes. If you are unable to make means to support three cars, then Id have to say its probably hard for you to keep the Maserati already.

Just my $.02

Ive had 20something other cars since purchasing the Claret, and I never let her go. Came close a few times, but Im glad I stuck with it!

Get out from under the Maser

12 years ago, I needed a sedan and had to have only one car. So I sold off the tired '67 Mercedes 250S I inherited from my mom, sold off the '78 Alfa spider that was my daily driver, and bought the 164 with 52,000 miles. As of now, I have lived through the usual 164 diseases, the soft tranny output bearing, the cracked gears on the stepper motors in the climate control, and the window switches that need a constant dose of WD40 to keep from corroding. Now, at 95,000 miles, everything works, I treated the cracked leather (the first owner was a skier, took it to the slopes, left it out all night in freezing weather, then sat on untreated leather seats. Result, deep cracks.) Found a solution to that, which will work on the SVX as well - a company in England, called Glyptone Ltd. makes a leather treatment that not only filled in the cracks, but when finished, leaves it smelling like the inside of an English club. Anyway, back to the point...
I got a job that was about 50 miles from my house, along the notorious I-405 freeway. Didn't want to use the (stick shift) Alfa for commuting, so I lucked into a (don't laugh) Geo Metro convertible. One liter, 3 cylinders, 60 horsepower, but 42 miles per gallon in traffic. It had 118,000 miles on it. And cost $350. At 187,000 miles, it ate a valve, and the rebuild was more than it was worth, so I had to seek another car. I should note here that since I write about cars, I occasionally get a car from the manufacturers to evaluate, so my own can stay parked. Anyway, I saw a '93 Mercury Capri convertible on a car lot near my home, and the dealer was cool enough to give me $700 for the Geo in trade, as is. The Capri, which is based on the Ford Barchetta concept and built in Australia on a Mazda platform, has evolved into a truly pleasant car. I just drove it to Monterey and back, and it was great. However, much to the disgust of my ex and (to a lesser degree) my daughter, I wasn't satisfied. I now work at home, so my commute is from the kitchen (breakfast) to my bedroom/office and the computer. I drove the SVX when it was new, and fell in love. It took four months for me to get the one I now have, and there are a few issues, but it's great.
So now I have the Alfa, minimal use, great joy, the Capri, daily driver and 30 miles per gallon (plus the top goes down) and the SVX, and I'm happy.
This has been a long detour, however basically, keep the Alfa. Keep the SVX. Find a replacement for the Maser that is cheap to run and fix (like a Miata,) and enjoy motoring.

why should i keep my svx

Looks like the italian cars were too much of a draw, so I kept them and sold the svx. I was put off by the svx, when I had to change the plugs. What an f.... pain.I like working on my cars but the svx was too much. I enjoy my italian cars and have had more people showing real interest in them. My neighbor, when he saw the svx, called it ugly, but he has always liked my alfa and maser. So basically the svx is gone. When I was in England, my first car was an alfasud sprint(european, not the mis named american gtv), so hooked on italia. Actually planning to move to tuscany in 2008. After all I have a euro nationality. Gotta learn italian, but things will be ok as long as i don't meet any tom tancredos there. I just wanna see him there and kick that piece of crap out of europe. One boot up his italian ass should do it. Sorry Not racist, but this guy just irritates me.

which car will be better to live in when you're homeless?

the SVX doesn't really have that much room in the back seat, so there's a strike against it.
the Ecsaine probably isn't good, either, if you'll be eating your meals in the car. it will probably stain easily with your body oils if you aren't able to shower regularly, too.

Is this guy for real??? I just cannot believe that he prefers ANY italian car over the Japs...

Other than Ferrari and Lambos, over here you can barely see an italian car on the road... Even though the Arabs are stupid, not that stupid to buy italians because they know such cars are CONSTANTLY prone to failures and they are extremey expensive to maintain...

You have a Maserati TT ?? hahahahahhaa.... aren't you crying man? I bet you are!! I can bet that you paid so far 10X in maintenance for this car for what it worth...

In Lebanon, such a car is being sold for a max of 5000$, low mileage and any year!!
