A/C compressor oil change?

I've read/heard that the a/c compressor's oil should be changed every so often. Considering that i have a 92 and the a/c isn't working i figured one of the first steps would be to change the oil right? How does one go about doing that, and what type of oil is used?

Also, how do i even know if the compressor is functioning properly?
