CLattering noise on #2

Trying to get SVX #2 on the road. Copped it at the local Subaru dealer when I stopped in to purchase some parts for SVX #1
and saw it sitting on the lot. Well, I bought it knowing something was wrong with it but figured to use it as a parts car. It calls to me in the night (((fix me))) so I drove it to work yesterday. It has a loud metallic clattering sound when first accelarating. It goes away after 20 MPH or so and I had it up to 70 with no weird noises or vibrations. Trans seems to shift ok. Only when taking off from a dead stop do I get this noise. I put the car on jackstands started it up and put it in drive. The front left and both rear wheels all turn but the passenger side front wheel did not. Had the wife give it some gas and I heard a clunk and the pass. side front started to turn. Front differential? Anybody ever dealt with this? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Doubt it would be the diff, could be the left front drive shaft C/V joint more likely.
Harvey.

That would be my guess too, Harv.

The left front being the "passenger" side down under? That would be great if thats all it is. I've never owned a vehicle with CV joints prior to the SVX so I have no point of reference as to what "bad" CV joints or axles sound like.
Thanks for the reply Harvey. And RWJ.

Dart, you might run it by Beav's shop. He could probably tell you in a heartbeat.

Ya took da woids right outta my mouth! I'll be in all week and off on Saturday. Normally off on Tuesdays, Sundays and swap the first Tuesday for the first Saturday (kinda.)

If you ever plan on swinging by at lunch call first, I usually go home for lunch. The reason I mentioned that is a week or so ago while I was at lunch someone stopped by and asked for "the guy that works on Subarus." I/We still have no idea who that was.

I am just curious about our driveline? if the rear diff and center coupling are both LSD and the front is an open wouldn't that mean only one front wheel will turn if lifted of the ground? like on a regular 4wd with open diffs

you guys are probably 100% right on a bad half shaft but I have never seen my car in drive while off the ground

I appreciate the offer to take a look at my car. I just need to arrange some time off unless you're working this saturday. Your shop out near J-town somewhere?

Goose Creek and Westport, about two miles west of Gene Snyder on Westport. 426-5020 Unfortunately I won't be there this Saturday but next Saturday (even more unfortunate) I will be.

I'm going to use some of your excellent tips and try and install a halfshaft I bought awhile back on the Black car this weekend.
If I have problems or it doesn't cure the noise I will call your shop
and try and get an appointment for next saturday. Thanks again
Beav. Westport Road. My old stomping grounds. Jeez brings back some memories. We used to luv that straight stretch on Westport Rd. where the Gene Snyder entrance/exit ramps are. Sheesh what we got away with back then..
