Post Tranny Rebuild Problems
I hope you can steer me in the right direction.
After a year of owning the '92 SVX with 74K miles and no problems I suddenly lost reverse gear with no prewarning. All forward gears worked great. Took it to an indepentently owned transmission shop (35 years in business, AAA approved). Long story short I ended up getting it rebuilt, their recommending to do so since the tranny had to be removed and opened up. Now, when I turn hard right or left, such as pulling into the driveway, there is a vibration or shudder when I accelerate Was not there before. Is this tranny related or power steering? The rebuild was Master Kit (heavier duty clutches) $347, Filter $17, Reverse Dished Plate $54, Rebuilt VB Sub R4AXEL $260, Fluid and Lube Garde Red $58, Labor to remove and replace tranny $400, and Labor to rebuild $730. Total without tax $1,949. Gene

Sounds like the AWD binding to me.

Is it fair to claim it as a warranty issue? I am due to take it back for the 500 mile inspection.

do a search of the Network on "awd binding" -- there is an additive available that has proven to eliminate the binding ...

You do not mention that the solenoid valves were replaced. In this country specialists insist on this, if they are to offer a guarantee with a rebuild. Soleoids "C" and more so "A" are subject to considerable mechanical stress, due to repetitive operation.
A faulty solenoid valve seat could be your problem and this form of fault would not show as an error code. AWD binding, as is wisely suggested by Earthworm, could well be caused through a faulty "c" solenoid.

Believe me, I did a search before posting here and I read and read, and ......
The list of possibilities got longer and longer. One thing I noticed, it would be nice if posters would end the threads with Fixed, this is what it was. My son ran the codes last night from member Lee's excellent write up. Nothing but constant flashing light on both the new and old code routine. Trevor, I listed what was done from the invoice and there is no mention of solenoid changes. I was tending towards that as the problem. I wanted to go back to the transmission shop with some understanding of what the problem might be, especially if it was as a result of the rebuild. On a side note, my Volvo transmission started slipping badly yesterday and the dash problem light started flashing, as did the Sport, Economy, Winter mode switch. I thought I was cursed. Went to my mechanic of 25 years and he jiggled the key in the ignition switch and everything went back to normal. Have a new switch on order. He's a Volvo, Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Audi speacialist but has been well versed on my former GL-10 turbo, Legacy wagon and now SVX's. Unfortunately, he doesn't do auto trannys. Gene

Gene,
Automobile manufacturers demonstrate that they do not have a clue when it comes to electrics. They arrange the ignition switch so that it interrupts several quite high current circuits. The switch is in continual use and sooner or later there is trouble, for reasons which are obvious and could be avoided. A useless comment I agree and one I make in frustration. Kick a tyre/tire for me Trevor.

Thanks Trevor and all who jumped in. I'm taking it in Monday and since I'm a gray hair, I'll pass on kicking the tyre. I'll beat them with my cane!
I think tyre should be spelled that way. That way you don't confuse it with being "tired". Gene

Fixed but I wonder if I was duped.
Binding or shudder when making hard right or left turns after getting tranny rebuilt. Took it back to the shop. They called and said it may be the front axle, there is a torn boot. Want to do that first to rule that out as a cause. Later in the day they said yep, that was the problem. I've had bad cv axles before and that was a clicking sound when turning, not a binding shudder.
Anyone think this was a ruse to get money to cover warranty work to correct the problem? Gene

The question remains...does it still bind?

David,
They were probably right after all. I still feel some binding turning hard left but hard right has gone away. Now to change the other side. Had both go on the '94 a couple months apart but the symtoms were totally different. My regular mechanic thinks they didn't reinstal the front end correctly. Gene
