Question Need Error code explanation?

Hi all,
My friend is having a Nissan Maxima and it is showing 'check engine' light from quite a long time and he is not using it. Yesterday he took it to dealer for check-up and he told tht it is giving 0744 code and its a transmission-torque converter signal problem or something like that. But i need to know the exact problem for that code. Do anyone know about the explanation of that code? The car is around 97-2000 model.

thanks,
-Pavan.

It's the torque converter. This'll give your friend a very good answer:

Good luck!

Thanks chike for the link. Do you have any info on how to change it?

Easy. Just go the your dealer and say "I would like to buy a Subaru"

Oops, sorry, did you mean the torque converter?

Nope. No clue. I'd take it to a dealer or an independent service shop.

Does anyone know how to clear the CEL temporarily. My friend needs to renewal tht car and he is not using it at present, so he just needs to pass the smog check. So, we are thinking of disabling the CEL temporarily and work on it later.

Does resetting of memory clear off the codes temporarily? If so, how much time it would take to read the errors again?

-Pavan.

If I remember correctly, the CEL on a Nissan will clear after 50 starts or you could just clear the ecu by disconnecting the battery for 20 minutes.

Yeh u r right, it is 40 starts. But, what I am thinking of is, will the CEl come on by the time we take it for SMOG, if we clear off the memory by disconnecting the battery?

It will if you drive it on the highway and the t/c tries to lock-up.

Then how about this, I will disconnect the battery somewhere near to the SMOG check and then i will take to SMOG check.
Does this works fine?
