Vacuum line fixes?

Hello SVX Guru's...quick question regarding the infamous engine vacuum line problems it seems everyone has with these cars. Does anyone have information on how much and what to buy for an entire vacuum line replacement. I know there are kits for many other cars, silicone (colored kits) kits available...non ever listed for the SVX - what we would need are:

1.) Vacuum line diameters and legnths for each size.
2.) On-line source for them, or, best place to buy them in bulk.

Do a vacuum line search on eBay, and it's pretty amazing how many people are making money selling cobbled, multi-colored silicone "kits" out there...all they've done is taken the time to get the different sizes (diameter) together and the proper legnths of each line, snip them...and then sell them for about triple the price for the actual raw cost of the silicone lines, themselves.

Anyway...if someone who HAS replaced all these lines has some information regarding total legnth in each diameter of all lines we have on this engine, it would be nice to post the info. It would also make it easier to just go buy all the lines and have enough to do the job in one shot, prior to just guessing and having either not enough, or too much.

I just took off my intake, yesterday, and (yup) found many of the vacuum lines disconnected, or dry-rotted. I (unfortunately) had to cobble to get the engine back together. Next time round...I'll have all the lines ready and do the job correctly. A good post with all the info on line sizes and legnths would save (for the future) anyone from that predicament. Just a thought.

Thanks,

Frank

I'm in the process of doing the vacuum and fuel lines under the intake manifold on my car too. I did a little reading, and I don't think standard silicone rubber would be a good choice. Its compatibility with gasoline is very poor. Even as a vacuum line, there is a good chance that gasoline vapors will degrade the hose. It seems that a fluoro-carbon hose would be much better. This material is recommended for use with gasoline, and has maximum operating temperatures well beyond that of standard nitrile rubber hose. "Viton" is a common name for fluoro-carbon rubber. Here is a place that sells viton hose by the foot:

http://www.greaseworks.org/viton_bulk/

Its pretty freakin expensive, but I'm pretty sure that it would be much less expensive than replacing all the vacuum and fuel hoses with OEM pieces which all seem to cost about $8/piece whether the piece is 4" or 2'.

When I did mine I just bought a bulk box of 1/8" vacuum hose at the local advance auto. They sell boxes of it in the "trouble" section. Couldn't have cost more than $5 for the box.

I did a little more searching and found out that McMaster-Carr (http://www.mcmaster.com/) has bulk viton hose for less money than the greaseworks place sells it for. Still expensive, but cheaper than buying the hose from Subaru, and viton will last forever compared to nitrile rubber. I bought some 1/8" line to replace some vacuum line hoses that were on backorder at Subaru. Worked great.

Watch out when removing intake manifold to replace vacuum lines as the various plastic sensors that are attached under the manifold are expensive and break very ( very ) easily where they attach to the vacuum hose. Just a word of warning.

I managed to break only one solenoid plastic fitting. Of course it was the most expensive solenoid under there.

I bet the one you broke was on the passenger side nearest the front of the car. I've broken the same one twice!

Are you sure that wasn't actually the plastic you were breaking?
