The Justy takes one for the team!

One the freeway last night, I ran over a brick. It had chunks out of it, and was standing up on one end, so I thought it was a paper bag until I got really close. At which point, of course, it was too late.

WHAM!

WHAMWHAMWHAM!

rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMMMM MMMMM

No major damage except the left-rear tire, which had a big gash in it. A few scrapes on the underside of the body, no big deal. But if I had been in the SVX the damage would have been far more expensive. While removing the wheel five feet from 80mph traffic, I found that the Sears in FL had cross-threaded one of the lug nuts. As a matter of fact, the guy here at the local Sears broke off the stud trying to get it off again. The service manager immediately decided to replace the stud under warranty.

Total damage: $42.

There's a whole extra story about the guy I was talking to in the waiting area, but I don't have the time right now.

Sears is notorious for goofing up lug studs. They actually twisted one off my wife's van, putting tires on. Well, it wasn't all the way off, but, it had been torqued so hard that it was cracked. When our friend went to do a brake job, it simply fell off in his lug wrench (hand wrench, not impact).

When we had to have new tires put on, I sent the wife to Sears again, but, had her bring the estimate home so I could look it over. I marked off all the extranneous stuff I didn't want, then, I wrote on the estimate, "If they twist off another stud, tell them I'll twist off their heads." She didn't tell them. She merely handed them the list with my "note" on it. The lady at the service counter sneered, and my wife said, "my husband wrote it, not me. If you have any questions, call him." I did not get a call and all the lug nuts and studs were in good shape when she brought the car home.

Yeah, I know - but they had the cheapest tires for the Justy. And since the Justy is an experiment (and experience) in being cheap, Sears fit the bill.

I did buy the last set of tires for the SVX at Sears, and that was also because they were the cheapest. I made SURE to remind the service writer and the guy doing the work that I had rules for anybody working on the car:

1. Do not soil the inside of my car.
2. If you smoke in my car, nothing (not even jail time) will prevent me from exacting revenge.
3. Do not soil the inside of my car.
4. Use the specified torque for the lug nuts.
5. Do not soil the inside of my car.

This strange obsession wouldn't have anything to do with a certain VT dealer soaking your driver's side arm rest with oil, would it?

Reminds me of the time a local "performance" shop guy tries to thread a lug nut on my svx with the impact wrench after I bought a set of tires there.

"sir, step away from the vehicle, put down the impact wrench, and no one will get hurt."

A year later I went in there looking for something small after I had put on my new rims and tires that I bought on the internet. The owner asked me why I didn't buy them from him.
