I change my Castrol 10W-60 every 8000 miles (it gets brownish) but it can hold an extra 1500 miles easily... this oil lasts very long.
I change it along with the filter

Every other car I've ever owned always burned a considerable amount of oil. It was always enough that less than %10 of the oil in the engine was more than 5k miles old. I just keep adding more and changing the filters once a year. My SVX burns no oil whatsoever. In fact, I carefully checked all the fluid levels and it doesn't consume anything except gas. (Got a bad leak somewhere. )

I figure every 7500 is about right. I use fully synthetic and it really does seem to last longer. (At least it looks, feels, and smells fresh.) Once it hits 7500, I change it whenever I get around to it. Anything under 10k is acceptable.

I have a buddy with a car that's only had it's oil changed once. When it hits 200k, (it's close,) he'll change it again. It only burns about a quart every month or two and seems to have good compression. The really strange part is that it's a Ford. I bet the Ford Motor Company is gonna want that car back so they can test it and figure out why it's lasted so long - to make sure it never happens again.

Concerning Ford's and oil....

I first got married in 1972, and divorced in 74. My then wife drove a 65 Mustang, 2-barrel 289, 3-speed automatic.

Sometime around when we got serious, say 1971, I asked her - while stopping for gas - when was the last time she checked the oil. She said she didn't know oil had to be checked. To her knowledge the hood had never been opened since 1965.

Significant Technical Input
Ford V8s have a decent rod length to stroke ratio that doesn't impose high piston side loads - probably how they can get away with neglect better than most. Also the reason they tend to rev easier than, say, a small block Chev.

The rings are stuck on the 200k Ford. A few oil changes using a crankcase flush at 1000 mile intervals would probably loosen them up and regain oil control. Downside is that the flush may break enough crud loose to clog the pump screen, which is probably close to clogged by now anyway...
