What does drilling more holes in the baffles do?

I driled them where back pressure would back up, and in a way to shorten the flow of the exhaust gas. It improved performance some, but I'm trying to fet my hands on some other mufflers to cut up differently and see what works best.

I was just talking with my friend about how it really wouldn't be that hard to make a muffler... i was thinking the straight through kind, with the fiberglass packing. Dynamax makes one that would probably be my template if i ever did it.
it basically is pipe in, diagnal pipe with lots of holes in it, pipe put. fiberglass packed, welded up with stainless steel.. and voila muffler.. it'd be cheap... and high flowing.. perfect for a GSX (DISCLAIMER: this would in no way shape or form go on my SVX)

Whenever I merge onto the highway I mash the throttle at the apex of turning onto the ramp and make sure I am going 30 mph, when the front of the car is paralel with the end of the white stripe I check my speed, do this a couple dozen times and see if it is consistantly faster than it was before. Hopefully this will take into consideration changes in air pressure, temp, humidity. It isn't 100% acurate, but I'm not interested in spending the money to dyno it, I really like to cut things up and rebuild them my way to see what happens
