How to tell a FWD from an AWD?

At first glance? Is there a rule of thumb? ABS=AWD? I would have said cloth=FWD but apparently there was a ABS/AWD package available. What years was FWD available?

So far Search has gleaned the:

Transmission- Listen for slippage. Sniff the fluid after it is hot.

Wheel bearings- Listen for the humming/grinding noise.

Brake rotors- Could be warped..... does it shake on braking?

Leaks, noises, etc.... such as you look for used car shopping.

Anything else I can't think of right now?

Hopin' to join y'all real soon.

Brian

Excuse me if I'm stating the obvious

The best way to tell if an SVX is FWD or AWD is to look under the back of the car and see if there is a differential and drive shafts connected to the rear wheels.

94 and 95s are the only time they offered FWD. 94L SVXes are ALL FWD. 95L can be FWD or AWD depending on the package it came in. The best way to tell is take a peek underneath the car like b3lha said.

or you could mash the gas from a stop and see if it spins tire.. 230hp and ~230ft/lbs works out to a pretty easy set of front wheels to spin..

Pick it up by the tail. The AWD is the one with the 'thing' under there.

One of my neighbours was looking to buy an impreza a couple of months ago. He wanted to know if it was AWD for FWD. I cheated and looked underneath to discover that it had no thingie and had to come to a conclusion that it's a FWD impreza.

If it's owned by an anally retentive engineer, it must be AWD

Limp wristed way.

If you have a bad back,or you arn't strong enought to lift its tail. Have a look for the FWD fuse.

Harvey.

Even easier is to look under the hood for the ABS module. It's clearly labelled and easy to find. FWD does not have ABS. All AWD have ABS.
