Found a '92 Lsi

hey, im new to the site, so bare with me

Ever since i saw a black SVX sitting in a jewel parking lot one day, I've been wanting one of my own. Up until now, ive had my heart set on a muscle car, but the winters in the Chicago area make that almost impossible without having a car for winter. So I figured a nice SVX would be my solution.

After quite a lot of looking, I have found a 1992 SVX Lsi. It is listed as being in good shape and running, but needing a transmission. After reading up, I found out this was quite a common problem.

I need to know your opinions- Is it worth the $2,250 they are asking for it? What other problems should I look for? How many miles are too many? How much will parts be to rebuild the transmission? (I have a good adult friend whose a master mechanic, so neither labor nor know-how are really problems)

I'd love to hear from you guys

I can come out and have a look at the car for you.

It's a 92 LS or LS-L BTW. LSi were not introduced till 94.

Also don't forget to look into the option of switching to a 5spd. Take a look at the cost of an auto tranny rebuild and weigh that against a 5spd update.

Depends what you like better.

value at $2250????

My 92 green pearlie cost me $1300 usd on ebay and needed a transmission.[128K miles]

I repaired that and everything else is mechanically perfect: there are a few dings and there is leather wear on the seats but 2200 should get you a running car

Check eBay, there are two there with good auto transmissions for about the same money.

Good car, bad trans should not be much over 1500$ maybe less with luck. Trans rebuilds/5 speed conversion will ease you out of $2500-$4000. without much difficulty

I just bought a 92 Pearlie LS L with 97000 miles for 2150. Had trans rebuild 20k miles ago (had a 50k mile warranty but not transferable), strong running engine, and STEBRO exhaust system already installed. AC compressor going out and a couple minor dents as well as bad hood lift cylinders and a cracked turn signal lens. Interior in good shape. So I agree you should get it for less.

I have another 92 LS L with a slipping trans (still runs most of the time except when trans hot) that I would sell for less than that. But am not in any hurry. First, I want to fix the rack on it--leaking. It is black and has an aftermarket spoiler (high) that young people love. I don't care much for it.

Replacing a transmission with a suby remanufactured auto transmission (at the dealer) will run about $2500 - $3000.

other than trans

you guys all seem to think that this is TOO expensive with a bad transmission- i thought just the opposite. Would it be worth it if the miles were low / body was perfect / interior mint, etc? Or would that $2250 still be a little high?
