I don't quite agree with Randy when he says it is a pity these revered marques are now Ford or GM or VW owned. [Yes, I know, I know he is the President ]

If the purity of design or engineering individuality is lost in the process, then, yes, I know why he mourns. But it is better the old marques are sheltered by the corporates and their survival assured, than have them go down in a blaze of glory. They also will benefit hugely from access to modern engines like the BMW and design facilities and so on.

TVR and Morgans are going strong in England, and Bristol. TVRs make very rapid and scary cars that tend to sit down a lot with electrical problems.

Morgan cars don't break down much, they are making the same models for years, and ought to have it right by now anyway.

England is blessed with auto engineering expertise, there are a number of other low volume car production outfits. One of the best sports cars in the world, and I do not exaggerate, is made by one of these, the Noble M12.

See http://www.noblecars.com/specif.html

This is a mid engined two seater with a totally communicative and controllable chassis, and surprise! surprise!, it uses a blown Ford V6 for motive power!

There is still plenty of individuality out there, you just have to look harder.

The original body style Troopers had the GM 2.8 six (same one found in the S-10 Blazers at the time) in them in 97 and up until they came out with their own six cylinder engine a few years later. It only had about the same HP than the 2.6L 4 that came standard at the time and only a few more ft/lb torque. Needless to say it was not as reliable as their own 4 cyl offering. GM engiines in Isuzus are nothing new. GM has owned a major stake in Isuzu for many years.

I really don't agree that this has anything to do with GM's influence. The cities using Subarus as emergency vehicles are mostly in the northwest and northeast, where Subaru has a great reputation already. Those areas get a lot of snow, and SUVs cost too much to run, so a Subaru makes sense.

Didn't the police in Denver, (and other areas of . . .) CO, years ago (and, perhaps now) use Saabs as cruisers?

And I found mention of Saabs used as police cars in Poland, Finland and Belgium.

Doug would have found you these, but he didn't think of using Google.

Thank you, Nick. I always knew that Doug couldn't love Google half as much . . . nay, a FRACTION as much as you.

I'm glad you found those references. I was hoping that the memory of Saab Police Cars wasn't just a product of habits from my checkered past.

My ears were ringing so I figured you guys must be talking about me.

Sorry I would have been in here earlier, but I was busy surfing Google because I love it more than anyone else.

I am a pessimistic optimistic. I think the worst is going to happen, that way when it does, i don't feel as bad, but if the best happens, i am twice as happy.

Those are some impressive specs! I'm jealous. If only we could get half the cars here on North American soils!
