That's good news! Did they repack the bearing with synthetic grease? I'd remind them to do that with this one..

I'm really glad they are making an effort to cooperate.
That bearing has to be "pressed" into the hub nice and easy. I have the feeling they probably beat the old one out (thats ok..), and then beat the new one in instead of pressing it.
I had problems with them years ago, and have never been back. I hope they get it right this time.

Tom, thanks very much for that kind gesture. Fortunately, I've got my mother's spare 200SX, but that's very nice of you to offer. I think what happened with the bearing, Mark, is that a seal broke. Or that's what they said. It was perfectly quiet untill I heard a big thunk sound. No sign of failure untill it actually happened, which was very quick. It might have been beaten in, which in turn caused the seal to brake. I don't know. But do you think I should call them and ask them to pack it with synthetic

most definitely have them pack the bearing with synthetic. That's what they should have done in the first place.

You know what Michelle? Now that I recall, I asked them about what grease they packed the bearing with when I initially got it done. They told me that the bearings are shipped sealed and they're already packed with grease. According to them, this seal can't be broken and the only grease they use is to lube the outside of it. Does this sound right to you or anyone else?

Tell them to repack it. If needed, buy some grease and bring it to them.

I mentioned to the guy behind the counter that the bearings should be repacked, but he insisted that the "seal" couldn't be broken. He probably didn't know what he was talking about. I'll try again.

My mechanic's done several on mine and he always repacks them like I asked him to.

bring your own grease and repack it yourself if you have to but don't let him put it back in the way it is.

It's wrong... and he word that I got about SOA using the right grease is incorrect also! They are not shipped sealed. As a matter of fact, you must buy the seals separately. I wish I had taken a picture of the bearings as they came shipped. But you could see the rollers and the grease, so I don’t think that they were sealed, unless you count the plastic bags they come in (which were not even stapled shut!). I asked the mechanic for my old bearings and he said that they just kind of fell apart as he was taking them out….

I talked to him again, he said he held the bearing in his hand and that it is definately sealed. I've got no choice to let them put it back in the way it is.

Mitch is correct. The Roo's dude either doesn't have a clue or is jerking you around.
Go to subaruparts.com. There is an exploded view that will show you how it all goes together; along with part#'s. They are always a good reference if you don't have FSM's.

You can tell him from me that he's an idiot! The parts that I got were labeled " 12/11/02" (that's the package date) So they are very recent! They are not sealed!

Davy, there was talk that Subaru were stopping the practice of selling the bearings with packing grease because of the amount of repeat failures. They were supposed to be packing the bearing with the correct grease for shipping.

If this is the case, and Subaru confirm it, then he would be OK using it. Me, I would worry bigtime unless they repacked it. How can you tell it is one of the new bearings, or an old one from stock that is wrapped in lard?? He does not want to clean out and repack the bearing.

Write out a disclaimer outlining that you gave instructions about ensuring the correct lubricant was used. If the shop did not follow your recommendation, and the bearing fails[which it will] then you have them by the short and curlies. Make them sign such a disclaimer if they are not willing to do it right.
