Another newbie says howdy
Hello all,
Well if anyone was following the red '95 on ebay a week or so ago and was curious where it went, wonder no more--it has been brought into the fold. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=31871 I had been looking for one of these beasts for quite some time and wasn't having much luck locally so figured what they hey. If nothing else I would get a break from the mid western winter and get to see Virginia. Actually, the car turned out to be a real stunner and was a joy on the 1000 mile drive back home. All except for this curious noise that developed along the way that sounds like a small jet is following me VERY closely. But as far as I can tell that is the only 'problem' thus far and everything else seems to be working like it should. I've been into (older) BMWs for ages and am used to their silky sixes but must say this is quite the motor. It's hard not to punch it just to hear that great sound. I'm sure I'll be coming up with loads of questions from now on but I'll do my best to go through the archives first... Okay, I can't wait so here's the first question: What do people use for service manuals? I feel utterly lost without my Bentley or at least a Haynes. Thanks in advance for any comments/advice/miscellania. Cheers, Michael |

Michael-
Welcome to the board! The six in the SVX could easily be the finest I'll ever experience. My girlfriend's father has a newer BMW 540i sportwagon and the v8 in that thing is unreal. As far as service manuals go, your best bet is to find a set of Factory Service Manuals specific to your model year.. I think you can expect to pay somewhere around $300 for the whole set, but in my experience, they're very clearly written and wonderfully illustrated. The Chilton's manual or SVX/Legacy/Impreza/GL/Justy was responsible for me breaking an ABS sensor (didn't actually need to be removed, but the instructions insisted that it did) I don't actually know WHERE you can find a full set of FSM's, but I'm sure someone here can chime in and help you out. Enjoy the car, but do it responsibly!! (you'd be surprised at the range of people who need to be reminded of that) -adam |

<<<All except for this curious noise that developed along the way that sounds like a small jet is following me VERY closely.>>>
IF that is from the back, check your wheel bearings. Otherwise, check your front differential oil and see if you need to fill her up. I have a slow leaking front diff. and it sounds like a jet engine noise at certain speeds if the oil falls below L on the mark. Bearings are not a big issue. Cheaper fix. For the differentials, save up some $$$. Welcome to the network. Lwin

Welcome here. She's (assuming it's a female) a very nice specimen, indeed. Why even the wheels are mounted properly.
The dealer's text said "new bearings installed". If you've scanned around in here for a while, you'll know that bearings can be quickly butchered by not swapping out the packing grease for the real McCoy. Call the boys back in Richmond & ask if they did this. If you get a "Do wha'"? you'll know what the roar's all about. Best of luck with your beast. Ron.

Phil,
When I redid mine, I made sure they repack it again. Just in case. I don't trust the SOA packing. I don't trust SOA at all... Just trust my instinct and my SVX. L

We've had several new owners not only join up, but actually check in, within the last couple of weeks. I was beginning to think the talk was alienating them. (Oh yeah. It probably was. )
Welcome Michael! Don't be a strangler.

Michael, welcome to the best site in the world. I have included an answer to your first question. Where to get manuals and how much. http://www.subaruparts.com/catalog/?section=203 This is one of the best sites to get parts. There are others, but this one is pretty good. There is a supplement for each year, and that is why it gets more expensive as you add them to the next year up. Don't be a stranger, and remember that you can use the search feature at the top right of the page to get answeres without waiting for an answer from members for almost any question there is. Good luck and congratulations on your new car.

Welcome Michael.
Hope you enjoy your car. My guess on the jet following is probably rear bearing/s. If you have any warranty from the dealer, then verify ASAP that it IS the bearings, and have them rectify it, or pay you to have it done locally. 1000 miles is too far to go for a fix, but get someone competent to do it, or expect a repeat problem quite soon. The SVX is a good car, with some few quirky things that need care. Joe

Welcome to the club, Michael! May you have many miles of enjoyment with your new masterpiece. Be sure to populate your locker with some pics and join in often. If you want a break from the midwestern spring be sure to attend the annual meet in Reading PA this April!

Dangit, Michael! You should have come here sooner. I could have arranged to meet you outside Evansville, IN (probably with Steve Wasion). It would've been great to hook up with a brand spankin' new owner near the end of their ride.
Occasionally, I'll be coming through your neck of the woods on my way to Omaha, NE to visit family. Perhaps we can still hook up some time. Welcome to the family, and may she treat you well. (Factory Service Manuals available at www.subaruparts.com However, may be on back order.)
