Tranny: Theoretical question
My new 96 polo has 46,000 miles on it and had the tranny fluid changed at the 30K service. I was thinking of changing over to synthetic, using one of the transmission flushing procedures.
There have been accounts of some transmissions failing soon after this changeover to synthetic. However, I have a Subaru extended warranty for 2 yrs/24,000 miles. So here is the queation: IF I change over to synthetic and the transmission DOES fail, is Subaru obligated to repair the transmission, since I am not using the factory-approved fluid? Is there a possibility that using synthetics will void my warranty? The wording is ambiguous at best. Its easy for them to say that using non-approved fluids caused the tranny to fail and that is negligence on my part. This is hypothetical and probably not worth losing sleep over (However, I never heard of engines failing soon after switching over to synthetic motor oil)

My question would be ... why bother switching to a synth in your tranny is already covered by a warranty?
I guess I would say why risk it... |

My .02 cents..
If you do not want the high cost of synthetics, try using ATF +3 instead of synthetics.
It is specially formulated to stand up to very high temperatures. Chrysler had a SERIOUS problem with their transmissions and developed their fluid to withstand the extreme heat. I have been using it in my SVX for maybe 5-6 years now and it is the best I've ever used. I bought the actual Chrysler brand from a Chrysler dealer because that is all that was available for a long time. I see Castrol and Aamco now sell it at Autozone for a much more reasonable price. Won't void the warranty either. |

Will Synth voild your warranty
I think it'll void it. Check your owners manual and see what it says about sythetics. I think it says they shouldn't be used at all. If it doesn't say call them and get it in writing that it will not void your warranty. If they won't let ya. I'd suggest changing your ATF when you change your oil I've just gotten used to doing it but it ensures that 1/2 the fluid is fresh every 4-6 month or 1500 miles.

Huh?
My question is 'Why are you asking us?' They're holding the bag on the warranty, call and ask them.
