Brakes are feeling odd...

So on my trip over the weekend, the brake pedal was responding oddly.

After long stretches of no brake use on the highway, when I press the pedal it is firm for about the first bit of pedal travel, then it drops 1" like there is a massive leak, then it firms up again. At that point it will hold pressure, and if I go off the pedal and reapply, it is firm the whole time. But then if I go another 15 minutes or so before I get on the pedal again, it will act up.

I'm guessing at master? does that sound right??

Youse use your brakes???

I would bleed it first, then if there are no leaks install a master cylinder.

Agreed. Bleed them, then if that doesn't fix it, replace the master cylinder.

Check your wheel bearings! Had the same feeling with my old legacy when the nut holding the CV joint backed off. The movement of the wheel pushes the caliper pistons out, went brake applied it takes a long peddle to bring the caliper back out then it behaves normal.

WOW,
I forgot about that!
That happened to a car I worked on,
once,
and a long time ago.

Wanted to update this and post that this was the problem.

It looks like I didn't stake the axle nut enough and it was beginning to turn off.
