Glass Headlights?

I remember back at the 10th anniversary meet someone was saying that they knew a guy who was goin to germany to find out if the glass headlights actually existed. Is there an update on this? Perhaps someone already knows if they do in fact exist, if so where could i get them? thanks

Chris,

I am not sure if German SVXes actally came with glass headlights. If they do, I'd love to get my hands on them. Perhaps I should call a dealer there and see. If I can get the part number, I may be able to order it through my dealer in Chicago.

They do exist. I believe John (svxcess) has all the info on them. Check out his locker for pics of them.

German law says that cars must have glass headlights. i thought i remembered reading that the german SVX headlights don't have the foglight in them, though. i'd gladly sacrifice the foglight, and just add some down below.

Other than the yellowing, which can be fixed with some scratch remover, the plastic headlights are far more durable than glass headlights. I got a trailer hitch shoved into the front end of my car, it pushed the headlight into the radiator and didnt even crack it. If that had been a glass headlight it would have been shattered. What I'm trying to get at is if someone infront of you shoots a rock out from under their car when you are going down the freeway at 70+, if it hits your headlight its probobly going to break. Or at the very least leave a huge pit in the lens. If glass lights are available, I'll personally stick with the plastic ones.

Yellow peril

Glass headlights do exist. The German regs called TUV insist on glass, to my mind rightly so.

Granted, it is possible to get the yellowing off the plastic lens, but generally at the expense of surface degradation, and subsequent diffusion.

I will rephrase that. Mine cleans up, but the light output suffers, and putting in hi-power bulbs makes the problem worse with more heat.

German lenses throw right on dip like American lamps do. You are right, the cheapskates did not bother to include the inner fog light. However, given the option, I would LOVE this lens option if the inner pair was clear, that way you could install an HID lamp in the inner slot, and have some serious hi-speed driving lamps.

English lenses are glass, but have fog lenses in the inner slot, no good for what I want, long range lights.

i think i'd take my chances against flying stones or trailer hitch incidents so that i wouldn't have to clean and polish the stupid things every 2 weeks.

Or an SVX shaped carry-all with half-zippers, as the case may be.

German law also says that you can not have glass headlight now for safety reasons. I do not believe the European SVXes got the foglight assy in the lights although that's the easy part to put in. I am looking for a leveling unit for the light.

ok, this is kinda off-topic, but.....saw a pic of a german interior in svxcess's locker. it looks like the MANUAL switch is in a different location, and an ECONOMY switch is located on the shifter. i've been wanting to put in a "power/economy" switch in somewhere that would select between the different shift maps. i wasn't sure if leaving it in "power mode" would hurt the tranny, though. a mod i had in my 928 that was popular for them was a "parallel kickdown switch". when depressed, it would trick the computer into thinking you were at WOT, and allow kickdown easier and hold shifts longer. the only thing was, it was believed to be bad for the tranny if it was left on all the time. apparently, the german SVX's have something like this in there from the factory! can't be that bad for tranny i'm guessing. anyways, i would probably do the same that i did in the 928 - wire it to a momentary switch and mount it at the top of the footrest. you could get power mode (or get it more easily) only while you held it down with your toe. i need to know which wire connects between the ECU and TCU that carries the +5v at close and 0V at WOT. can anybody with shop manuals/wiring diagrams help me with this? thanks,
