Using alternative Crank & Cam position sensors?

My 1992 Eg33 has been having random no start issues. After messing around I have traced it to a failing Crank position sensor.

Has any one sucessfully used a Crank PS from another Subaru to replace the SVX one. 1998 outback crank position sensors are $25 vs $170+ for the svx version. I thought I read of this being done with cam position sensors, but can't seem to find any info to back that up.

Any input or info is appreciated.

Cheers,
Ian

Re: Using alternative Crank & Cam position sensors?

Thanks for the info.

I have a bunch of good used parts on the way thanks to 1986nate. Hopefully I will have her back on the road by next weekend.

I still may try to pick up a new style EJ crank position sensor to try out.

Re: Using alternative Crank & Cam position sensors?

Harvey,

You say that crank #2 and the cam sensor are the same as the legacy and impreza parts. What years impreza and legacy can you use these parts from?

Thanks,
Ian

Probably about the same years as the car. 92 to 97.

Re: Using alternative Crank & Cam position sensors?

Sensors from 1990-1994 legacys will work, but you need the connector and some wiring off of the legacy you pulled them off of and splice them into the SVX wiring. The actual connectors are different.

Thanks for that Nate, I was not sure on the swap.

No problem, I'm pretty sure that later legacys work as well as imprezas but have not seen them in person to compare. The basics of the sensors are all the same, just a magnetic pickup that senses where the cam gear is so as long as it will bolt to the engine, the signal from them should all be the same.

I normally just grab cam/crank sensors from the pick n pull whenever they have a Subie in there. Normally they'll just charge for 1 or 2 when I have a handful and often times if I'm buying a bunch of other stuff, they'll just let me have them so it makes it cheap enough to check out. Subies just don't show up too often...
