Noisy lifters and the magic Honda oil filter.

I have a 99' Acura RL with 145,000 that's doing exactly this:
http://www.justanswer.com/questions/...they-put-mobil

I did not put Mobile one in it, but I did start using Fram oil filters around 9K miles ago when the problem started. At first it was just a mild tick, big deal Honda's do that. When I got the thing you could not tell it was running. Now it ticks just like noisy lifters but real loud, almost a knocking. It's pretty bad. Worse than any Honda's usual ticking that I've heard before. It does not get better when the valve train warms up either.

So, I'm wondering, is there such a thing as an oil filter check valve that prevents oil from going back into the block? Would that cause engine noise?

Re: Noisy lifters and the magic Honda oil filter.

I have heard of the check valves before, not sure if the honda one has one or not. Though i would never use a honda filter any more. I think every single one is made by Fram these days.

When was the last time your valve lash was adjusted?

also, ditch the fram filter, go with a purolator.

+1

Fram filters are about the worst, most problematic filters I have ever used. Read this review of a Fram filter from a 1991 Honda Accord.

Re: Noisy lifters and the magic Honda oil filter.

Yea... come to think of it I've never gotten a car back from a mechanic with a Fram filter on it.

I might try sea-foaming the engine, or taking it to a good Honda mechanic.

I've tried 10w30 and 5w30 (which is the recommended viscosity) no change really.

Such a nice car.. hopefully the engine does not explode.

P.S. From what I understand this car has hydraulic lash adjuster, but they can wear out. Maybe I should take a head cover off.
