maaco paint job.

well. i just got my car painted at maaco . I bought the signature finsh with out the cut and buff. It ended up looking alright, besides all the checking on the roof and hood and one run on the door. I say you get what you pay for. Anyways it looks a ton better then what it did.

That sounds like a lot of money for a "meh" paint job.

Re: maaco paint job.

That is good that you did the dissassembly... that probably saved you some money. 700 bucks hopefully goes further when it is spent on the paint in the can, and the time in the booth, rather than paying someone to do prep work.

Sorry to hear that there are runs, and such, though... My car has some signs of a previous repair done less than 100%, too. But for a driver with the resale value that these cars seem to have, and not a labor-of-love show car... it is understandable.

I have a brother-in-law in Fremont, NE, who does bodywork for a living... I'd take mine to him, if I were doing that, but I would likewise probably do as much prep work as I could, to save him time and cost.

Anxious to see pics...

If it were my car, they would at the least fix that "run on the door"

Re: maaco paint job.

Did it come with any warranty?

My car recently got a new paint job too. It may not be perfect for some people, but it looks tons better than before and love it. If you're happy with your car, that's all that counts

Re: maaco paint job.

$700 paint job? That barely covers the cost of the paint supplies! Hope it works out for ya next year! I've seen some quite nice maaco jobs that hold up decently but for $700 did you get clearcoat too?

I bet they at least finished it faster than the 2 months mine is scheduled to be residing at the painter. Definately post pics and details of what all they did and how they prepped it! As was already said if your happy that's all that matters!

Re: maaco paint job.

I dont think that chain company uses any primer under the paint, and usually no clearcoat on top of the paint.. That is how they can charge so little, you know, no cost of primer or clearcoat makes it a lot cheaper.

My local told me it would be $2k for the full bag, but I didn't bite.
I had a job done in Fl on my Arrow, and it baked right out in 2 years. So I had it custom painted for $2500, and it lasted another 7 years without any loss before I left behind.

Usually going over an existing paint job doesn't require a primer, an existing paint job that isn't peeling is a great primer. Most Macco jobs are base/clear, there isn't a huge cost difference in materials since they buy in massive quantities. It evens out because bases are usually cheaper and easier to mix than single stage paints and the same clear goes over all of it.

The paint jobs themselves aren't usually too bad, it is everything underneath that isn't too great. Though we did redo one previous Maaco car at the shop I work at that was a nightmare. For some reason the clear didn't stick to the base at all, dunno if it was bad product (which happens to everyone) or they let the base sit way too long. A trip through a high pressure car wash would have blown most of the clear off of that car if you found an area that was peeling. I stripped the clear off with a razor blade and an air hose, since sanding it was a waste of time and paper. It was also fun finding all of the trim holes from the woodgrain (Buick Roadmaster) that they had packed with Bondo to "shave" it so we could weld them up the right way.

Re: maaco paint job.

i sanded it down my self and did all the body work. It came with the primer sealer and base and clear. they offered me to get it cut and buffed for 400 bucks. i was like i'll find someone else to do it for cheaper.
