tire placement
I have two tires with aprox 3,000 miles on them, and will have 2 new tires put onto my car. The question ---- Where should I put the new ones? In the front, or on the back? My thought is that they should be in the front, but will be rotated later anyway. Maybe it doesn't matter, but I thought that I would see if anyone has a better idea. Thanks in advance.

When you say all 5 at the same time - you must be talking about the spare as well. Will a full size wheel and tire fit in the trunk? I just wondered if it would, and if there are any problems getting it in there. You would have a 50% chance of putting one of your wheels on backwards Then what? LOL What about directional tires?

Earl-
I've noticed the front tires tend to wear more quickly. That 's where I would put 'em. -Mike |

Where to put the tires
A quality tire and wheel shop will tell you that new tires should ALWAYS go on the rear of a vehicle for handling purposes (yes even front wheel drive cars). People tend to put them on the front b/c this is the drive wheel and they want the better tracton on the drive wheel (a carry-over in thought from when cars were RWD).
What would I do? Put them on the front of the car. You've only got 3000 miles difference. You should easily be able to even out those tires with a little spirited driving to the meet! That way your tire circumference will match fairly shortly (better for your transfer case). Just go say 9k miles before rotating your tires then go back to a standard 6k. A full size spare will fit in your trunk. Problem is it is about 3.5" too tall for the cover. I bent up a wheel on the quality PennDot roads 2 winters ago and it took me almost a month to get a use rim. They sent me the wrong direction one first. My spare is totally bald so I have been using the incorrect one as my spare ever since. I just got some 1/4" board and made myself a new top for the trunk wheel well. It doesn' look 100% but it works fine. It does cut into the trunk space though. Plenty of space in the wheel itself for all kinds of tools and stuff though.
