Question Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

I purchased some new tires last year, have very few miles on them...but they SUCK in the snow!

They're Kumho Ecsta tires, and I have absolutely no traction in my awd svx can't turn, cant go, can't stop...worse than my bald tires last year lol.

So...has anyone had any experience with Cooper Avalanche X-tremes? I can get them at a good price, trading mine in as new.

Otherwise I found a good deal on some blizzak MZ01 tires but not as good of a deal as the others.

Thanks!

The front tires on our dually 1 ton 4x4 are avalanche extreme. The have excellent grip and nice tread pattern. I just wish the 4 rear tires were the same.

Thanks Blacky, here's more info:

I can get the avalanches installed on my car for 260 total (they'll take my tires trade-in for 50 a piece)

...or I can buy some blizzak ws-50s for 300 bucks, 70% tread left and install them myself with our tire changer. I'll be able to keep my tires for summer use then.

Ummmmmm...did you expect to be able to use them in the snow? If you did, you need to rethink something.

Cooper Avalanche looks to me like a light truck tire. Buy a set of Blizzaks.

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

i had a honda with Kumhos, and drove on ice once with them. Worst handling tire on ICE i ever driven. thats 20 years of snow and ice driving. It was horrible. Kumhos SUCK. and the tread was near new. just really horrid.

Well as far as Kumho tires go I have them and I am pleased with them. Escta tires are not meant for ice, it clearly states that on their website and many others. I know mine isnt and I don't have Ice and snow down here so it doesnt apply to me. Great handling in the rain tho!

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

Ecstas are simply not snow tires, though. I'm no fan of Cooper... I've had Blizzak WS-50s and REVO1s (current). The WS-60 is the replacement for both of those, so you may find a good price on either of those models as they're phased out.

The snow tire thing has been well covered on NASIOC; check it out.

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

I bought the Kumhos without being able to research...I bought the car and it had two completely different tires on it, and just went in thinking they would help me out. I told them I wanted some good all-seasons and they sold me the kumhos at a higher rate than retail I found out later also.

SO I got stuck with summer tires basically, and got screwed out of a lot of $$ lol taking advantage of the girl strikes again! so yea, i definitely made a mistake getting them but was concerned about running AWD with different tires.

I'm leaning toward the Avalanches because they're brand new, whereas the blizzaks are only about 70%...and I can get rid of my tires at the same time and get some summer tires later on in the year.

I can't find anything on the Avalanches though...no reviews, no one online sells them it seems!

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

WS-50's as stated above have been discontinued as well as the REVO-1 and are impossible to find replacements for at this point. So if you were to get a set of tires i would stray from getting those just incase you needed to replace 1.

WS-60's are the best out there for what you would need and where you live. I have been driving on WS-50's for the past few years and most of the other rally teams out there as well for competition use bc we are not allowed to use studs, until this year! these tires are simply the best up to the task and will not dissapoint.

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

Blizzaks are made by Bridgestone:

They're known to be a very good winter tire...made my Uncle's old Camaro a tank in the snow so I know they're good, but I imagine there are others that are good as well. The ones I'm looking at are here:

Oh, they're made by Hercules.....Save yourself the money and trouble. If you really want to put the cheapest, poorest quality tires on your SVX then fine, go for it, but don't say I didn't warn you. I wouldn't put those tires on my car if you paid me to do it.

Really? Did you have a bad experience with them?

Re: Tires: Cooper Avalanche X-treme or Other?

I work in a tire shop. Very few brands (perhaps MotoMaster and Ling Long - yes, those are real tire brands) make me more unhappy, and I can usually tell the difference pulling the car out of the shop on a cold snowy day. Decent tires are smooth and grip. Those sort of grip (don't get me wrong, they'll be better than almost any "all-season"), but not nearly to the same extend as others, and they're stiff, noisy, rough...Just generally unpleasant. Not to mention I can almost guarantee they will shake, because "round" is sort of interpretive in those situations.
