A/C Compressor Noise

A new problem on my (usually) problem-free '96 SVX. Lately, turning on the windshield defroster or A/C, I get a noise from the A/C compressor. The belt is not slipping, the pully cycles on/off/on normally and there is good flow seen in the A/C sightglass.

The noise is not squealing like a glazed or slipping belt. It is not exactly metal-to-metal sounding either.

The noise sounds like SOMETHING is about to let go or seize.

Any ideas?

Re: A/C Compressor Noise

Had a similar problem on my 92, turned out to be the bearings on the pully. My mechanic at first said new compressor and I asked why he didn't just replace the bearings...he did it for free and all was well.

Re: A/C Compressor Noise

After some searching here, I have not found a good source for bearings or how-to. Any leads? This is a much better alternative than replacing the whole unit!

Maybe it's coincidental, but my '96 stranded me for the 1st time today. Last night, at start, the engine turned over slower than normal, I attributed it to the cold. Same this morning and this afternoon. Got gas this afternoon and she wouldn't start leaving the pump.

Tried jumping, no go. Tried bumping key hoping to get it to start, no joy. Finally gave up and flat bedded her home.

Symptoms: turn key, minimal click from under hood first rew attempts, no click after try#10 +/-. Battery is 10 month old yellowtop. Ideas, y'all?

-Not a good day to be my SVX!

Re: A/C Compressor Noise

Try cleaning the terminals off. Mine was starting to start half the time and quit working. Cleaned the terminal plugs and posts and it's all good now.

Re: A/C Compressor Noise

When it clicks and doesn't start do the radiator fans come on?

If this sounds like a stupid question, It could be!

It also could not be...
