5mt swap aftermath... clunking when turning
Just did a 5mt swap on the SVX and whenever I turn while driving, there's a loud clunking noise and it's hitting the steering wheel. Originally thought it was because the svx axles were too short for the 5mt so i put in some wrx axles which are longer but the problem is still there... Any suggestions?

that's what it feels like. when it makes the clunking noise, you can feel it in the steering wheel. i dont think the steerin rack would do this but i really have no idea

I'd say check your sway bar end links and make sure they are tight. then I would start looking at all the other suspension/steering components and find out what is going on

Really? That would explain why it would only do it when driving. Gonna have to check that

OK, its not the sway bar. But i think i came up with a better explanation of whats going on. It's like the wheels lock up while turning and are then pushed free and thats when it clicks. Wheel barings maybe gone bad? Just weird that it does it only on turns

What transmission did you use?
What rear differential did you use?

Transmission out of 2000 2.5RS, stock rear diff housing with 2.5RS insides. all out of the same donor car

Does it happen only under load? That is, when you turn and hit the gas?
If so, it's might be your half-shafts, CV joints. If its happening when turning, I'd say check the fronts. I had the same thing a while ago. Craig

Hmmm?? I know MT's have a completely different AWD set up. I've never heard of torque bind in a MT???
Tom, what do you know about this?

gotta be honest... Sounds like axles... If the wrx axles were too long they would bind when the car is lowered onto the ground. But since they have the same track, I am going to say they were not longer. I am gonna say that is bad axles of a bad front diff... Thats all I got unless it is suspension related

What axles are you supposed to use in the swap? The WRX axles looked longer when sitting next to the svx axles.
Also, if it was the center diff, wouldnt it do it all the time and not just while turning? I wish there was a way to sit under the car while driving aned listen to where its coming from lol. |

The axles are your best bet I believe... I would safely put the car up on all 4 corners and have someone put the car up to 10 mpd and turn the wheels while you look and listen under the car (don't climb under the car stay off to the side). You might just find what you need to Tom |

Could it be the steering colum u-joiny knuckle thing? Try spraying the bajeesus out of it with PB blaster, mabey you've got some rubbish in there. It's easilly viewable from the engine bay, on the drivers side...down low by the wheel. Spray it, turn the wheel a few times, spray it , turn the wheel, ect and see if it smooths it out
IF not that, then it is probably transmission related
