Got my 4.44!

Ok... well, it's not installed yet, but I went to the you-pull yard today and got a 4.44 from a '98 Forester 'S' AWD (it's an early '98 with no spin-on filter) plus the torque converter and rear diff for $173. (It'll be less when I return the cores).

The donor car was hit hard in the front which is why it was there. Someone had already pulled the engine and front/rear struts, which made pulling the tranny a piece of cake. Trans. fluid was clean and cherry-red, and is now all over the back of my Legacy wagon. I couldn't see the mileage because of the digital odometer not being 'on', but all other signs said 'go for it'! I can't wait to get it installed!

Any decent WRXs in that yard?
I ask because the person pulling my 5mt also lives in SLC.

Oh well ... you said it's U-pull-it?

Butt's still a very good deal! You will love the better acceleration.

You-pull yards

There are actually three you-pull yards in the SLC area. I got my tranny from a place called Tear-A-Part. There's also one called Western Pick-N-Pull, which currently has a '92 Claret SVX, fairly complete. (Tear-A-Part has no SVX's right now). There's another yard, too, but I can't remember the name. I've never seen much of anything newer than 2000 in any of those yards, and never any WRX's or GT's. Mostly what shows up is base-model Legacys and Impreza's, with the occasional Outback or Forester. The prices at these places APPEAR to be great on their posted price lists, but after you've pulled the part and are at the register paying for it, they nickel-and-dime you on other stuff that's attached to what you're buying. I assumed that an automatic tranny would include the torque converter, but no, it was an extra $20! Add the core charges, environmental waste disposal fees, entry fee, manager's lunch fund, taxes, etc., and you're paying quite a bit more than you originally expected.

And it can still pull 120+ when a riced out civic irritates you.
