never done it on a sub, but they usually take a drift or a flat head and a hammer.

If you're thinking that replacing the fuel pump might correct your rough-running problem, my guess is you're doing a lot of work for nothing.

Re: fuel pump removel

Found this in a manual, though it doesn't really specifically say how to remove the cap over it:

-Unscrew the plastic retainer that holds the top on the tank in place
-Pull up on the lid and remove the hoses and connectors
-Remove the gold colored metal retaining clip
-Remove the fuel pump assembly

The pump is usually screwed or clipped to the assembly bracket, as well as to the fuel line and pickup strainer. Subaru has a special tool to remove the fuel pump cap, but it doesn't look all that special IMHO. Pic attached.

Re: fuel pump removel

Well that's neat, but there's no way that tool would fit on my cap as it was not centered in the access panel.

If I were to add to those instructions just for the sake of being specific:

-Unscrew (counter-clockwise) the plastic retainer that holds the top on the tank in place. Impaction force may be necessary.
-Pull up on the lid and disconnect the lower end of the two softer hoses and 2 upper connectors
-Remove the brass colored rectangular metal retaining clip. There are four tabs securing it to a plastic fixture. Looking towards the back of the car dislodge (by pulling outward) the 2, 5, and 7 o'clock tabs as the 10 is too cramped even for someone with baby hands.
-Remove the fuel pump assembly by lifting and rotating it. Remember which way it came out because if not put back in this way the filter will get caught on a green wire and something that appears to be a cornbread muffin on the bottom of the left side of the tank.

Here is a picture of the clip, because in my opinion it was not very obvious at first:

I have to admit, I was reading through those and the part about "something that appears to be a cornbread muffin" made me chuckle

Re: fuel pump removel

Great job on the picture of the locking clip NikFu.
It's not exactly obvious the first time one sees it down in the tank.

Re: fuel pump removel

Just removed a fuel pump from my 92 yesterday, but I haven't gotten a replacement quite yet. The problem I have is that the pump runs but it doesn't pump any fuel - I even checked at the lines coming right out of the pump.

So I pulled out the pump (NikFu's pic was very helpful), and - after successfully dropping that clip in the tank, fishing it out, and almost doing it again - gave it the ol' ball-peen tune up, but still nothing.

Now I have heard that sometimes if a fuel pump is clogged you can get it to sort of unclog itself by running it in reverse with a jumper pack, so i figured it would be worth a try on an otherwise useless pump, but that was no good either. Anyone else know if this ever works? I'm just curious about it at this point, because I'm guessing that my pump failure is due to some internal parts failure.

Re: fuel pump removel

If you've got it out I would just replace it.
I would also attempt to take it apart and service it, but I am like that.

Re: fuel pump removel

FINALLY replaced the fuel pump and got the ol girl runnin today.

And as a side note, I took apart the old one just to see what went wrong. Found out that the pump seized up, and there's two tabs on the rotor that powers the pump - both of which snapped off after seizing. I'm thinking plastic parts weren't the best decision the engineers made that day.

I took pictures while i was dismantling the old pump if anyone is interested - now i just have to remember where that camera went

Re: fuel pump removal

Ok, this is probably a lame question....but why does it look like 2 FP's in the tank?
I see a standard Subaru cylindrical pump with the sock on it, then theres the black square one that has the clip on top like shown in Nikfu's pic.
Which one do I replace?
