That sucks though. Buy one with a perfect body and switch around parts? I hate to see SVXs get parted out, but that may be the direction .
I would much rather see one with a good body and mechanical issues (can you say tranny?) repaired than parted, as so many are wont to do. We try to contact anyone who is considering parting out one just because the tranny is shot, and convince them to consider a 4.44 swap.

BTW, when we brought the rolled Pearlie home, Tom was semi-seriously considering making it the first convertible SVX. But he really doesn't need any more "projects".

You are very lucky that it did not go right into YOU.

What you have described sounds incredibly dangerous. If I was in your shoes, I would not be discussing insurance, I would be suing the city. If it happened as you described, and it was not secured and the wind blew it into your vehicle, then the city are liable for not securing it.

I do hope you have witnesses about the unsecured pole and the windy conditions.

I've been thinking about how someone could make one. But, the windows just complicate things.

The windows wouldn't complicate things that much, but i wouldn't go convertible, because of the support that is provided by the roof. Convertible or targa top, first accident or hard stop and the car will fold in half. T-tops, on the other hand, defidently seem feesible, as you can rig some sort of support out of that. If i had hte proper tools, and time and money, and had already done everything else i wanted to do to it, i would consider it. I want to see how it looks under the headliner, to see if it would be possible to just make it a massive fixed glass moonroof, then cut and apply the headliner appropriately around it. Finding the glass for that might be difficult though.

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, scotch in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming HOOOOYA !!!!!

Bah, to hell with windows. Get rid of them, chop the roof, don't even install a convertible top, and drive fast enough that the rain is deflected by the windshield.

Sort of like Chip Foose's Speedbird.

I'm going to look at the car tonight for feasibility of making it topless with windows gone entirely.

Can someone explain the structural issues again ?

The roof is a structural part of the car. If you remove the roof, you need to replace that structure somewhere else. This will require adding some significant steel to the bottom to strengthen the chassis.

If the pillars aren't bent, another option is to keep the roof frame, but remove all of the sheet metal.

Possible glass top in there, and you have a real nice moonroof.

If you have to ask, it ain't feasible, unless you're gonna hire a pro, and if you're going to do that, you might as well fix 'er up right.

Hmm. That Saab vaguely reminds me of the Maserati Birdcage on display at SEMA a couple years ago.
