I got a half axle from Pep boys years ago for my suby wagon. The CV joint failed not too long after installation. Upon dissection there was an extra ball bearing floating around in the cv boot!

But - I still buy aftermarket rebuilt axles and don't worry about it. Just not from pep boys.

Could be the haulers broke something when they flatbedded the car, just guessing....I've seen some people wrap straps around anything to hold the car secure.

......just wondering aloud........

where EXACTLY did the axle fail?

the inner cv housing has an off-set pin that affixes it to the transmission stub......it LOOKS like its centred on the shaft but it definitely is off-set just a bit.......

my car had that drift pin forced in with a large hammer by a transmission shop that didnt notice the problem........i had a HECK of a time getting the broken bits of drift pin out of the cv housing....

if the axle was installed 180 deg off then it could MAYBE cause a failure.......?

i dunno..just a thought...........

10 minutes

Tom,
I'm about ten minutes south of philly. You want to make some money? Like I said earlier, the legacy needs work(axle, which i have) & the svx needs an axle too(which i don't have). Let me know, I'll buy the beer and everything.

Snapped axle

You are going to get a replacement or your money back from Advance Auto, aren't you?

Volkswagen salesman beats subaru mechanic

Just finished doing the axle on my 95 legacy. Took about 2 hours. This time, instead of giving the car to Mike(the subaru mechanic) i had Bill(VW salesman) come over & we swapped it out. Lets see if i get more than a week of driving out of this one. It'll be interesting to see if the pep boys axle on the legacy holds up.
