Exclamation Urgent, Should I buy this car?

Hi everbody,

I'm a 21 years old guy from Sweden (Abba and Absolut vodka you know ) that has been offerd to buy a Subaru SVX -92. Becus of that this car is wery rare in Sweden, subaru only imported 10 cars, all in -92, I don't know so much about the model.
So I thougth that I put all the info about the car up here and lett you guide me.

Here we go.

As I said its the 1992 modell, And its the 3.3 liters enginge. The car is 100% orginal, its been served allrigth, rusttreated every 3 years, and the owner of the car is a friend to the family, she is 70 years old and has owned it seens it was new. The car has driven 138 000 kilometers, Its new winter and summer tires, New windshield.
They have showed the car to 3 different carfirms, and the onlu thing that they can find is that its leaking a littel oil from stearservopump, but I understand its an easy fix. And its a littel rustmark above the rigth rear tire, but the owner has order a paintshop to fi it, and payd for it.

They want $6,600 for it (50,000 SEK), thats like half of the money they ask for the two other SVX that is for sale in Sweden, and they has traveled twice as far.

The problem is that I have to make up my mind before monday, otherwise they will sell it to a carfirm.

I will go test the car on saturday, What should I look for, whats ordinary problems on this modell? (I will take pictures then and post them here)

THANKS IN ADVANCE
Patrik Isaksson

Common problems for these cars is Gearbox failure and rear wheel bearings. You could take it to a shop and have it inspected.

Well

If you are ok with the price buy it. I have a 92 thats very nice and it has cost me as much to fix it as it did to buy it. Remember the transmissions go out, wheel bearings and power steering pump. So drive the car in a parking lot and turn it side to side with the radio off and listen for bearing noise in the rear. Do a lot of stop and goes so the transmission can run up thru the gears and see how it shifts. Mine lasted 3 months after I bought it in the summer heat and then it went out. Put the extra tranny cooler in do some searching on this board for other things to look for.

It all comes down to your thoughts on the car after driving it.

Best of luck to you.

john

Thanks, now I have a bit more to look for tomorrow

One more question btw, is it a good winter car? we have winter / snow here for 5-6 months a year, and on the summer I drive a Suzuki GSX750R, so it have to behave good on snow and ice (should not be a problem with 4x4 or would it?)

/Patrik

Yes, It is good in the snow. I've heard people not having trouble until the snow is deeper than 6 or 8 inches. The awd is great for snow, the only problem you should have is with the ground clearance. If the snow gets deeper then the front of the car, it can start the build up and left the front end of the car.

Hiya

Sounds a very good price for a 1 owner car and sounds like its been well maintained & reasonable KM's.

Its a European spec with the less troublesome gearbox and being in a colder climate it would not have been subjected to the higher temps and accordingly high running temps.

The whole gearbox issue baffles me at times, the Japanese dont see it as anything of an issue with the JDM car, I can only presume its mainly a US spec problem.
Show me another at best 10 year old car that has not had a wheel bearing or 2, my mitsubishi evo7 had the rears go at 40K and 3 years old.

I would buy the car, you will love it and its even rarer there than here in the UK!

It sounds like a good one. Look at the list mentioned and was a link to what to look for in a used SVX. If you like the car, I would buy it and I think you will be fine. Besides the transmission cooler, I would also install a filter. Good luck and let us know how this goes. I am sure you will love the car and how it handles in the snow and rain.

with a good set of snow tires, the SVX is a monster in the snow, but as mikecg said, the SVX is low and clearance becomes a problem. i've only ever had trouble once, when the snow was over my bumper and i couldn't even pull out of my garage!
