4WS diagnostic codes

I have a JDM with 4WS, and have had the red 4WS light on once or twice in the past month or so. I have run the diagnostics and have an 11 (Speed Sensor - cut/short) and a 33 (Rear Wheel Steering Speed Sensor - cut/short or sensor failed). Any idea how I can further determine what I need to do to solve these problems? For the moment I have cleared the codes to see if either of them occur again in the near future to help isolate the problem.

Dave,

Did you see the 4WS fault finding guide posted in "the other Phil's" personal Locker ?? If you have exhausted the instructions and still need help I'd drop Phil a PM, he has 4WS experience.

Phil.

Just to confuse you the "other Phil" is registered here with the registration of his wife's car, "B3lha".

Hope you get it sorted out.

Phil.

Phil,
I used Phil's (b3lha) information to help me find the diagnostic codes - now I am trying to go deeper and determine what I need to do to address the problems identified by the diagnostics. As a parallel, if you have a problem with the climate control system the workshop manual (the web-enabled one that we have access to) tells you what to do to further test the device identified as failing by the diagnostics and how to replace it or how to fix the problem. I'm really looking for that type of informationso that I know where to find the rear wheel speed sensor and how to test it or replace it.

I don't know too much about 4WS.

However, I am wondering if the codes you are seeing relate to one sensor, or two?

The gearbox has two sensors, front and rear. The front one sends a signal to the head unit[speedo] and also to the ECU/TCU to determine speed for the gear changes and so on.

The information from the rear speed sensor is also processes by the TCU. If it sees differences, it adjusts the power to the front and rear axles.

The reason I am saying all this, maybe the code 33 refers to a bad signal/broken loom from the rear speed sensor on the box. It is likely the 4WS is controlled by another computer. This computer could be using the information from the rear gearbox sensor. If it sees something wrong, it throws code 33. I dunno, just speculating.

It wouldn't hurt to ask Harvey in Coff's Harbour. Harvey has the JDM manual, and may have the follow up information you are after.

Joe

If you look at the translated diagram on James' website, it seems to show a separate rear wheel speed sensor located somewhere near the rear diff. I've never noticed it when looking under the car, maybe the diagram isn't strictly accurate.

It occurs to me that Dave has just had some gearbox work done. When we had the gearbox done the first time, it started giving 4WS codes. The dealer said that it was just bad connections. I wonder if they have to disturb some of the 4WS connectors in order to drop the gearbox.

Dave, Has the problem returned since you cleared the codes?

Phil.
