Is it really street racing if the other car has no chance?

We had a woman here killed 2 sundays ago. 3 cars were doing in excess of 100kph (60mph) where people normally drive 70kph (60kph limit). She was coming from the other direction and cut across their path to make a left turn/u-turn.

Now the police are jumping all over this saying that this was caused completely from street racing and using this as an opportunity to enforce more rules during our beloved sunday night cruising.

I personally don't believe this was 100% the racer's faults. This woman should have seen how fast these cars were going. She did not die at the scene but died in the hospital the day after.

From the diagrams of the accident I saw I don't think she would have been able to make the turn even if the other cars were doing the speed limit.

I think they were leaving out information in the story:
- was she on a cell phone or otherwise distracted?
- what was the extent of her injuries?
- what was the ultimate cause of death?

i have found that poliece departments omit information to dramatize incidents to suit their own needs. i studied this trend in my philosophy of law class.

That is the lamest defense of a criminal I have ever heard.

Do you say "The girl shouldn't have gone to the club dressed like that. Its her fault she was raped"?

Did you know that when you look head on at a car coming towards you, until they are about 1000 ft from you, almost everyone is unable to judge the closing speed?

60 mph isn't a huge difference from the 45 mph he said they normally drive at.
is that any different than the people in this thread who admit to going WELL in excess of 100mph on public roads?
around here in the suburbs, its not uncommon for the flow of traffic to be 20mph or more over the speed limit - more than that in the streetracing incident.

i'd wager that a cell phone, Chicken McNuggets, or makeup was involved.

I still don't understand why everyone insists on street racing. I guess you guys have never or rarely been to the track. Even when I know I will get smoked(like when I race my brother) I get the biggest rush ever. I have never had an adrenaline rush on the streets like I have had at the track. Although I am always trying to beat myself at the track and on the streets I don't have much trouble beating others if I really wanted to. My only point is, Street racing can be very dangerous and this is one of it's main attractions for many people. Until these people realize that they are going to hurt themselves and maybe other people, it will never stop regarudless of laws or how tabu it becomes. I mean look at DUI's across the country, are they really dropping that drasctically regarudless of how high the penalty? I know people who were sober and got killed or seriously hurt by drunk drivers, me being one of them to be victimized. This shU$T is always gonna happen, it is just being prepared and wise on making decisions that will make or break you. I got in a hit and run in Philly that could have killed me(almost sent me and my truck over a 75' drop over the gaurd rail. Luckily I was not seriously hurt and this jerk had the balls to try and tell me it was my fault!! I called the cops and when I was on the phone he jumped into his pile of crap van and sped off. For my own insurance reasons I never followed up on this guy because it would have cost me more money in the long run. Listen, I don't think anyone really condones street racing, if people did, it would be legal. It is just as stupid as driving drunk yet it will continue to happen and to be honest with you, it will not stop until driving privelidges are revoked from everyone.

Tom

For 1000' it would take 15 seconds to cover the distance at 45mph and 11 seconds @ 60mph.

Now say the cars were only a quarter of that distance away. There would only be 1 second difference between those speeds for the cars to cover that distance. She still would not have been able to pull off that turn given the extra time.

I'm not saying he's not guilty of street racing. I'm just saying it sounds like she should have been able to avoid this incident.

I remember reading in another post that we should always "watch out for the other driver". Sounds like this wasn't the case.

The best advice I can give to any new driver, is to expect everyone around you to do the stupidist thing at any moment, and expect a car to be sitting in the middle of the road around every corner and over every creast. That is the rule I fallow and it has allowed me to drive well over "legal speeds" for many years with NO accidents. Basicly I drive like everyone else is out there driving like me, it keeps me safe and prepared.

Thats a rediculous comment, that 15mph could very well have made the difference between this woman living and dying.
As for her being on the cell phone (like you've never done that), or chowing chicken McNugget or what ever is something we will (probably) never know, since she's dead.
