Rebuilt SVX transmissions 101

I just wanted to make a thread with a concern I have about when people are selling their cars, or buying a used transmission for an Svx.
I see cars for-sale with rebuilt transmissions or used transmissions for sale saying they are rebuilt.
Thats all well and good, but one thing most people dont know is this:
When ANY shop including SUBARU remans or rebuilds a
Svx trans ( or any trans for that matter) they dont replace
any of the hard parts. Main shafts, gears and most importantly....FRONT DIFFERENTIALS Ring and Pinion.
So of course they all offer a warranty on the trans, with the exception of these parts breaking. This means your rebuilt trans still has a front diff with alot of miles on it. Just the rest is new.
So the diff can still break anytime...maybe soon maybe not.
I bought a car off the net, advertised 15k miles on new Subaru reman trans,....the day it was being delivered to me
the front diff "wammo" broke....Zero Warranty.
The Subaru and other companys dont offer new front ring and pinions in the OE ratio anymore. So they dont replace them when rebuilding them just in case.
Even the transmissions my guy builds for me doesnt offer a warranty on the front diff.
Just keep this in mind when buying a used Svx or used transmission.
Im personally working on trying to get a company to start making me new ring and pinions, but not sure how its going to go.

Yes the front diff can with the correct parts.Linkie to parts page.
97 has the price for the ring and pinion. Linkie
You may have to order and have a shop build it up, or you can do it yourself.

This is true. About a month after I had my trans rebult, my rear diff broke. No warranty on the diff. I ended up paying 300-400 for it not sure on the exact price, it was awhile ago. After a tranny rebuild, and replacing the diff and my awd stopped working, I was strapped for cash. Worst 3 months of my life.

that explains why my 'rebuilt" blue box (the bell was painted blue) went only 1 year after rebuild.

When my front diff went along w/ my tranny... the front diff parts alone where $2100. They where sourced from some company in new york. I'm sure they could be found cheaper but it was the only place at the time (2 years ago) that they could find anything for it. It sucked writing that check. Next time my front diff goes... im having an adaptor plate made up so I can bolt in my old 700r4... screw awd. At least in Texas.

Front diffs.

In the US Transfer AWD, the front diff is put at risk, when the AWD stops working. If the C solenoid or Transfer valve is inoperative it can't prevent the front wheels from spinning. This puts a lot of jaring loads on the differential gears, and the crown and pinion gears, to cause damage.

Trying to spin the front wheels is a big NO NO.

This thread has really got my attention becasue I have been told by Liberty (Oradell, NJ) Subaru about two years ago that all those parts are waranteed.

Is there another possibility? From what I have been reading in other posts, is it not possible to get a different ring and pinion from a salvage yard for the front and rear differentials and install them?

If you can find a used ring and pinion that are a matched set, you can remove them from another trans and have them properly installed to work correctly, sure.
Heres a pic of what it looks like when you hear that

By law Subaru has to have replacement parts available (important parts anyway...not things like trim or carpeting I think) for up to 10 years after production. I checked my computers and found more than 30 SVX ring and pinion sets at various Subaru warehouses. The problem is that the old number is no longer used, and does not supercede to a new number. However, there is a bulletin from Subaru explaining that the parts are still available, just under different numbers. So, it's possible that Subaru was out of those numbers when you called and has since restocked, or the dealership did not check bulletins and did not know the new number. But the parts are still available.
