Transmission jerk in "Park"

When I put the car into "park" and turn off the ignition, the car jerks slightly backward. The car is on a level surface. Has anyone ever had this experience or know what it might be?

The car should lurch a little forward if anything.

do you park your car on P ? only ? you should park your car on the handbrake, take out your foot from the foot brake to let it settle on the hand brake and then put P.
You know all the Range Rovers (95-2000) are having their transmisson broken because of this way in parking... so BEWARE YOUR TRANNY !!!

I agree.... it is the best way to park ur car on handbrake... i always do in tht way only... and also it helps to keep ur tranny safe....

this goes the same for manuals. Brake first, then use the tranny as a secondary measure.

Yep. Let the brake do all the work, with the tranny as a back-up.

A little known fact: the harder you press on the brake pedal before you set the parking brake, the stronger the parking brake holds.

Thanks, one other thing I have to think about aside from allmost always gradually bringing the car to a stop.

Just kidding, like gradually stopping using handbrake instead of park is probably healthier for most cars and trucks. And any procedure to ensure longitivty for any other car I should do for my SVX, well most.

How can this possibly be true? the brakes are a hydraulicaly powered disc system that is COMPLETELY seperate from the drum brake parking brake system that is in the rear discs, that is operated by a cable.?!???

I'm trying to imagine what might cause this. Could you be a little more specific and explain step by step what you do and when the car does what it does? Are there any noises associated with the jerk? Does it matter whther you're parked on a level or angled surface?

also does it depend on if you put it into park really quickly, or go through both neutral and reverse and then park?

I'm not sure but on the 4eat, but it would seem that maybe one of the reverse gear clutches is getting a slight jolt of power.. maybe an electrical/short issue??? (speaking from knowledge not wholly related to cars... )

It doesn't matter what the slope of the surface is that I am on. I stop the car with the foot brake, put the gear selector into park, and turn off the ignition. As soon as I turn it off, the car jolts backward about two inches. This is without using the hand parking break. Of course, if you put on the parking brake first, it prevents this. I am concerned there is a problem in the transmission.

But is it 'trying' to jerk backwards? I mean, the parking brake is holding the car, but is there an obvious jerk from the tranny anyway?

Does your 'power' light blink when you start the car? That would indicate an electrical fault in the tranny.

Thanks for being more specific - but at the same time I wish you hadn't. It's just really weird and I haven't a clue right now what would cause this when you shut the ignition off.

It does jerk anyway and yes I am getting an error code of 24 whicj is Duty Solenoid C in the tranny. I am going to have it replaced next week and see what happens. The part is $70 and I have no idea on the labor.
