Transmission Remote Oil Filter

I have installed a Perma-Cool remote transmission oil filter.
Is the Perma-Cool oil filter that is included with kit anything special or is it just a standard PH8A/HP1 engine oil filter? Which would be best to use? The Perma-Cool replacments are somewhat difficult to come by. If necessary I can get one. I just don't know if it is worth the trouble and extra money.

Hi Tom, the oil filter that is made for an Auto trans is different to an engine oil filter. It is a lot courser, more like a strainer, the engine oil filter is very fine, too fine for the low pressure oil flow that runs through the cooler. It would reduce the flow to the point, of starving the box of lubrication.

So go to the trouble, spend the extra money, you will save in the long run.

Harvey.

I've been using standard PH-8A oil filters as my tranny filter on both svx's for quite a while. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to

I woun't tell anybody if you don't.
The engine oil pressure runs to 80 psi, I don't know what the pressure is on this box, but it would be about 15/20 psi at the most, hence the hose clips holding the cooler pipes.

The main concern is that unlike other autos, that just dump the cooled oil back in the pan, the 4eat pumps this cooled oil into the mainshaft to lube the gears and bearings. If the flow is restricted the high clutch and epicyclic set will burn up. This what happens when the early models, block the cooler with bits of clutch linning. Thats why it is most important to flush the cooler out and fit the filter on pre 93 models.

Harvey, The above concerned me, sending me to Perma-Cools site to look for a dealer again, which is why I went with the B&M originally, unable to find a PC retailer. I'm currently using a K&N filter. This is from Perma-Cool's "remote oil filter" page;

"All remote filter mounts with 3/4-16" thread are designed to take Perma-Cool® 81008 , Fram® PH8A or equivalent."

I note this is the very same filter that comes with the trans filter kit.

Sorry Glenn, I don't know the make up of the filters that you say. As long as it is for an Auto trans it should be the right one.

Can that filter be used as a replacement for the original recall-installed filter? Or would I have to replace the whole shebang?

The kit comes with hardware and hoses for making an original installation on a Legacy. The filter unit looks identical to the SVX "campaign" filter.

Harvey,
Guess I didn't make myself clear in my last post.

TMALSS, Perma-Cool lists the 81008 filter on their Trans filter page and on their remote oil filter page, where they include the others as interchangeable. This would appear to me to mean there is nothing different about the filters Perma-Cool sells for the Trans filter since they use it for both applications.

Anyone wanna look at the site and express any different opinion on this?? www.perma-cool.com/

Glenn
