Re: noob help lol

Are you going to keep it auto, or changing to a 5 MT?

Any 4EAT up to a certain date (When they went to the external filter, which I think was 2000) is a direct swap, however anything other than a SVX transmission will have a different final drive ratio, and will require changing the rear differential as well. Members have had good luck swapping to a 4.11:1 transmission out of an Outback, but you will have to find an Outback with the correct ratio rear diff that also has LSD if you want to keep the LSD in the rear, otherwise you will be swapping in an open diff which won't have as good of traction as the LSD.

5MT is a bit of a challenge, as you will need a custom transmission crossmember, shift linkage, pedal cluster, and either a custom drive shaft, or a drive shaft spacer. (Tom can chime in with more information on this one as I'm sure he knows more than I do )

And no, you cannot have a manual and automatic at the same time, some of the newer Subarus have a "sport" mode that allows you (within reason) to upshift and downshift manually, and there is a JDM 5 speed Tiptronic (basically an automatically controlled manual) but they are pretty rare.
