broken front diff?

I just had a bad experience that left the car in a parking lot. I left work early (sick) and was on the way to get some meds when I heard some crazy noise. Sounded like the axle had popped out and was grinding spline to spline while trying to propel the car down the road. I pulled over, called a ride, and haven't been feeling well enough to visit the car today. The last thing the car did was act like the brake was on when I tried to reposition it in the parking spot. The trans fluid was good the day before and the trans has about 12k on a Subaru installed reman unit.
So I have read here and there people mentioning that the front diff shells on them. Without actually looked at the problem I was just wondering what the symptoms of a bad front diff would be. I am too new to Subs with awd to make assumptions. I am curious how the input shaft of the trans and the pump isn’t destroyed if they are part of the diff.
I had been thinking about 4.44's, but don't have the time to deal with something like that. I need a vacation!

Let us know what you find out. It does sound like it could be a front diff. Good luck and hope you feel better.

I Thought that a Suby rebuild of the AT included the front diff as well in the warrantee and all the gears in the AT. The front diff has shimming procedure to get the backlash correct. This should be done as a standard on the rebuilt AT.

Take care,

John

What's a reasonable price on a pair of diffs? May as well go for the 4.11 or 4.44's if I have to jack the car up again.

OK I realize that I could search for this, but with just moving, car breaking down, missing work due to illness and having to work extra to make up the hours, the GL needing a carb rebiult to run, trucks brakes on wear indicators...
shouldn't there be like 32 hours in a day?
Anyway, Q. being: I need the SVX running again soon and could really use some strait info about which model and years I need the diffs from to do the 4.11 or 4.44 swap.
Watching the front wheels lock while being put on the flat bed today really sucked.
I would like any input from others that have done this swap in reguards to any and all parts that are or may need to be replaced. With the 4eat having about 12k on it and the fluid being in good shape I am trying not to say F**k the car and sell it. It has cost too much time and money in the 5 months I have had it to justify keeping it, but I really do like the SVX.
This forum has been a blessing and I have appreciated all the input from everyone here. Damn good people!
