Cel

I did a lot of driving today in ~95 degree weather which is probably a reason for this problem, but yeah my cel came on. While stopped at a light in D the rpms were going up and down quickly like wum wum wum wum wum so I put it in neutral, and it felt real shakey. Every time on first startup I'll back out of the driveway, hit the gas, and the engine wants to die then pops to life. After warmed up while cruising and keeping the gas in the same position, cruising at low speeds, the rpms will sometimes randomly go up and down in a 200-300rpm window. I turned the car off, then on, and that got rid of the light but the problems are still there.

Fuel problem maybe? TPS? MAF sensor? I'd really like to get this car in mint condition before Winter.

If the CEL is coming on, then the ECU is no doubt storing fault codes that will help you narrow down the problem. I believe there is a document in the how-to section regarding codes and how you can get them from the ECU. If your car is OBD=II, then the solution is simple - you need an OBD-II reader.

Thanks. When I started the car back up the cel was gone, will it still blink showing the last code thrown?

It will store fault codes for repeat failures. Even if hte light isn't on currently, it could still be storing codes.

If your car is 92-95ish, it will be OBD 1, and you can read the codes using the connector in the footwell.

When you read up on this, you will see there are two ways of reading the codes. One way, it gives you current faults that the engine is reading and storing.

The other way, it will show you previous faults. So they are stored in long-term memory.

I'm not certain if you go through the clear codes routine, does it still hold on to the "previous" faults. Probably does hold them, so the dealer can be aware of previous work done when checking problems.

My guess is the IAC (Idle Air Controller) is either faulty or needs to be cleaned.

Where is this? It sounds like this could be the problem, or maybe the maf.
