OEM Alarm Puzzler (long)
OK, I just read about 50 of the previous threads on this subject, and despite a few enlightening tidbits, found no solution to the current dilema.
Following major service some months back my system would no longer go into program mode, displaying a steady lamp when disabled, rather than the previous wink, and of course, inoperable. I ordered a "new" unit from subaruuparts.com, receiving a module in a bag looking like it may have survived Viet Nam, and outside case looking about the same. I called and they agreed to send along another unit, with return tag. Got that one yesterday, and proceded to install it this morning. I was greeted by the correctly flashing lamp, but when attempting to get it into program mode repeatedly, NO JOY! Yes, I followed the "How to" here on the Board, "On-Off with unit disarmed, rapidly push button until p-lamps flash/horn beeps, then program remotes etc". All doors/trunk/hood closed. I tried the "ugly" unit as well, with the same results. I plan to try s-parts.com again Monday. I checked the module fuses of all 3 modules with an ohmmeter good. Clue?: I've noticed that the dome/room light no longer lights when either door is opened, although I can turn it on with the spot/room etc switch, and the floor and door courtesy lamps work normally. The manual says the alarm is triggered by the door/trunk lamp circuits activating. Question?:Is it possible that the inactive/inoperable domelight circuit could be the cause of my problems with the alarm??? Any other ideas??? Glenn

Just curious, where is the secutity module located?
Mine doesnt blink at all. The previous owner told me that he had it "deactivated" whatever that means. Thanks, Elliot |

Guess a question is better than no answer??? LOL! The module on 92-93 cars is up behind the glovebox, a black box to the outside of the opening, rather than the smaller aluminum one toward the center. You have to remove the glovebox and door to access it, and 2 bolts into the dash support secure it. You can be certain you've found it by the 8-10 inch antenna wire sticking up and back from it.
To reword the original question: Is it possible that both "new" modules could be defective, OR, that the aforementioned room light issue could be a factor in the failure to enter the programming mode?? C'mon guys. Who else am I gonna ask??? Glenn
