broken cv joint

will it hurt to drive the car with a broken cv joint on the front left? I really need to get the car back home and towing is not an option, as im at college over 6 hours away and dont have that kind of money. will it do any damage to the transmission or anything?

and yes the actual joint is broken not just the boot.

Thanks guys, i need an answer asap if anyone knows the answer.

Driving 6 hours with a broken cv joint sounds like a really really bad idea. however i'll let someone else chime in to explain whether it wil break anything else.

Why are you trying to get it home? Can you just order the parts at a local subaru dealer, and either have them put it in, or do it yourself?

Depending on what school you go to, explaining the situation to the schools auto club/ automotive engineering types might get you the use of some tools and a lift, and maybe even some help.

Exactly how bad is it right now? Does it just click when you turn?

If it's totally broken (no power to the wheel) your in big trouble. Don't even attempt to move it.

the axle can spin freely while the car is sitting still, so yeh its totally broken. It has a nasty clicking sound all the time even sitting still, the axle just barely moves in this state. So it is not connected in the boot at all.

so no drive or yes drive?

i cant get the axle in here, i dont have the tools or anything, back home i could...

I put 5 k on my car with a bad axle ( didnt know the clicking noise meant bad cv joint or axle). Replaced it in May. I didnt notice anything different except the clicking noise when i turned right.

A broken front CV makes your svx a rear wheel drive car. No power will go to the front wheels due to the open diff.
They weren't designed for 100% torque to rear wheels so I wouldnt drive it too far and I definitely would go easy on it for any distance I drove it.

All in all, you could probably make it home, but I wouldn't recommend trying it - if the CV axle decides to come apart completely along the way you could have a dangerous hunk of metal beating the crap outta the suspension, steering rack, engine, etc.

I had a front CV break in my wagon during a snowstorm. It became a rear wheel drive car. (hardly moved in snow) I drove it about 100 miles total before getting it fixed.

Being a redneck with AAA, I'd personally probably risk it. But I am crazy and prone to try stupid things.
