I agree that sprint does have a decent share of the cellular market. They did that by merging with a couple of big cell providers a couple of years back not truely by getting more customers. Their sales were really crappy last two years. They did not have any major updates at all on their cell towers in the last year and half. Yes they use Motorola cell towers.

It becomes my issue if a provider like sprint decides that instead of adding more towers for bandwidth, they are going to kill the much needed 911 call system. That is there for a reason. I paid for the e911 tax. I want to be able to call the damn 911 call center when I want not when sprint allows me to. And it is a federal voilation. That's when I have issues.

It's like any one of us driving down a highway/interstate and you have a ghost driver driving right at you. I'd say it's dangerous and rackless. Different story but same concept. The system is there and required by FCC for a reason, just like driving on the right hand side is required in this country for a reason.

When I'm talking on the phone I want to know that I have a phone in my hand and not a little toy or something... All of the nextel phones seem to have some "body and weight" to them... I think I'll like that...
it is the most rugged and tough phone i've had. it is also larger and heavier than most cell phones out currently. sounds to me like it'd be a good fit for you.

I live in Roanoke, Va and have had Nextel for almost a year. I love it. I work 50 miles away in Martinsville and with the "walkie-talkie" feature I can talk to the wife back in Roanoke with no problem, no long distance charges. The Motorola phone we have also has the speakerphone option so I can use the speakerphone in the car and do not have to hold the phone or deal with an earpiece. The only drawback is that of coverage.
True, it is only in major cities and along major highways & interstates, but that is fine for us.
It is all a matter of what you need as to whether Nextel will work well for your needs.
I still have an old analog phone in the car for emergencies incase I an not in a Nextel cell and have an accident or need to contact the police.

I hope everyone knows that you do not need a cell phone contract to dial 911 or 611 on your cell phone, only thing you need is signal.

Again, same thing: As of Aug, 1998, US congress passed a law (also a FCC regulation) that all cell phone carriers have to have e911 services.

Which means that as of Aug 1998, any cell phone, as long as it has some form of signal and power MUST be able to make 911 calls and when a 911 call comes in to a cell tower, it MUST make room for that call to go through. Most towers if all the connections are full WILL drop 5 calls to let that 911 call go through.

As of one and half year ago, aGPS feature was added and all new cell phones MUST have aGPS installed and using that 911 operator can locate where you are (great if you are trapped in a building WTC???)

So if you have a old phone, it's not useless at all. toss it in the car with a charger and you can call 911.

It's good to find someone who likes them... Would ya agree that they are probably gonna get bigger over the next year or so since they are now in bed with NASCAR??? They have to be making some money in that....

Yeah, I hope they get a lot bigger & increase their coverage.

I hate not having signal once you head off of the main highways and into the country. I love driving my RU's [SVX & WRX] along the Blue Ridge Parkway but there isn't much Nextel signal in most places along the Parkway.
