subaru keys

i only have a crappy metal one for my new pearlie but would like to get an oem or "subaru key" i looked on ebay and there are a few different style ones , but will they all be able to be cut down to use or are some of them a different key design (groove lines in them )?

Re: subaru keys

There are at least two key types, which are close, but not quite the same. You can use the 90's style ones, but not the 2000s style ones, basically. There's not a great selection... May I recommend this? I have one and I like it a lot.

Re: subaru keys

The 2000s style keys actually CAN be used with an SVX, they just need to be "shaved" down a bit.

You mean shortened or made flatter?

Re: subaru keys

You need to make it flatter. They are longer, but it doesnt matter. The key just sticks out of the ignition lock a little bit more.

Re: subaru keys

My car came with two keys (actually four, but two of them don't go to it!). One was the "master" key with the black plastic head and the valet key had the dark brown/grayish color head. The only difference between the two is the grooves. I think the groove spacing is a little closer together on the valet key. I work at a hardware store and we copy keys, so I looked to see if we had a blank that would fit the SVX. None of the "subaru" blanks fit it, but I found a Nissan blank that works just fine. The grooves are the same as the master key. The only difference is the handle shape.

It's an Ilco key. It's says DA25-X123 on it.

It's not surprising since our cars share a lot with Nissans, especially the Pathfinder.

Don't get those! ^ they break, VERY easily. i had 2 of them and they both broke within a month. i have those generic walmart ones, and they haven't broken yet.

I had one of those break off in the ignition of one of my previous svxs. It left me stranded at a gas station in Virginia while I waited for a locksmith to come out on a Sunday! That wasn't cheap.
