Why cant it just run right....

So today we did this...

Changed the valve cover gaskets
Put in new NGK spark plugs
Put in a new fuel filter
Put on new belts
Put on Dayles stage 1 intake

And here is the result...

An engine that is running VERY rough at idle. When I unplug one of the injectors, it does it even worse, if I unplug two, it dies. When I unplug the rear passenger injector, nothing happens, it doesnt get any worse or better. What is wrong now? There is also a vac leak somewhere that I can hear hissing pretty loud, but cant seem to locate it.

I was hoping doing the above changes would make my car reliable for a while... I guess not...

Someone please shead some light to what is going on. If it matters, there is no check engine light comming on...

-Dennis

your car is old..it breaks

to locate the vacuum leak spray some carb cleaner around the area you here the hissing. your rpms will change when you spray the leak. It sounds like it may be the intake gasket. try to tighten all of the 12mm bolts on the intake..

as far as the unplugging the injector thing. It could most likely be a bad coil or a non functioning injector. check with a test light at the injector connector it should pulsate when the engine is running

No go on the intake bolts, they are as tight as they can get. I cant even pinpoint where the hiss might be comming from. Ill think its somewhere, then it will be somewhere else. I think its behind the PS pump somewhere, though we didnt mess with anything there. There is a place on the intake by the TB that is supposed to have a hose on it, and doesnt. Its on the drivers side near the bottom of it, but its got no suction to it, and there wasnt a hose there before...

As for the light thing. I dont have one, and if I did, I dont know how to use one of them...

BTW: It ran perfectly fine before we did all of the work. It would idle smooth... It just leaked oil like crazy...

Did you by any chance drop a spark plug and mess up the gap on it? Just a thought.

Before doing anything else I'd swap out that one plug and see if there's a change.

I didnt drop a plug, and they all looked perfect when we put them in.

And yeah, we cranked those covers down as tight as possible.

Where could I get one of those plugs?

Replace the coil, not the plug. That most likely will fix your idling problem. It's really easy to mess up those old coils while changing plugs (easy enough that you probably wouldn't even notice you damaged it).

If the hissing noise is coming from near the PS pump it could be the o-ring between the pump and PS fluid reservoir.

I Fixed It!

And you will never guess how...

Go on, guess...

Well, there are three colored plugs above the valve covers, and my brother unhooked one of them. I am not sure what they are for, but I hooked it back up, and she ran perfect again. The plug was a little blue one...

However now I am upset because... I just spent fricken $50 on an AC recharge kit, and 20 minutes later, it only kicks on for a second every 30 seconds... It looks like the retrofit coupler was causing it to leak out...

But what happens happens I guess. Good news is, Im not leaking anymore!

The miss was due to leaving a coil pack unplugged... Green, Blue, and white are the colors of the coil connectors... The blue one was not connected and reconnecting it allowed that cylinder to fire... Good job and all looks much better

Thanks Tom. I can actually open my hood now and not be in shame of the huge mess

As for the engine, due to time right now, we left it in. Ive got the seals to do the front and rear mains, but thats later. I also have the rear timing belt cover to put on, but again, that will come later. Its running good now, except for the vac leak which is still there (I think thats what it is, though Im not sure) but its seemed to shut up a lot since I got the coil back on

And thanks to everyone who helped me through this project! It will be nice now that when I come to a stop sign... I wont have smoke going everywhere.

About 5-6 hours for everything. Keep in mind this was our first venture doing this to this type of engine (first time for me period). Plus we did some other things in that as well besides the covers (the belts and what not). But it went pretty smooth I would say.
