Transmission Problems

Well driving home from work the other day my transmission started shifting a little late.

Couple of days later it started having trouble going into 2nd when driving at a normal speed. I could just sit there and rev it up to 7 grand.

But If I was to punch it .... it would shift out (sometimes). So I popped into jiffy lube and did a tranny power flush. The transmission is still slipping.... reving up like its in neutral when im shifting into 2nd. Damn

So I need to know ... is this something that can be repaired or am I going to have to get a new tranny all together.

If I have to get a new tranny I need to know what to shop for. What makes will bolt up without any problems.

It would be cool if I could just replace the torque converter. I would entertain the idea of a 6 speed if the price is right.

Well it looks like 3rd gear is gone. I cant do over 65 mph without it reving up like it in neutral (slipping). I have swapped some trannys on a early 90's truck.

Im sure this AWD sports car transmission is extremly hard to remove and re-install. The actual transmission on this car is alot smaller than the ones im used to on trucks. Luckly I only work about a mile and a half from my house. Second gear will have to get me to work for awhile.

Just a shot in the dark, that resistor next to the battery could not go out and cause this right? Man, that would be a miracle.

I would hate to see this car go to the auto graveyard.

Do a search in this forum. You'll find lots of related info. I haven't had this problem, so I've never focused on it, but IIRC one of the soleniods is required to get 3rd. These can be replaced w/o pulling the trans. DIY for around $100.

Solenoid 'A' is the one required for third gear. I know this because when the transmission resistor fails, the circuit for Solenoid A is broken and the car can no longer shift into 3rd.

Are you getting a flashing power light upon startup? There should be. Even if there isn't, try putting the transmission into diagnostic mode. See if there are any codes stored. Here's how:

thanks for the heads up on the solenoid... I found a foreign transmission mechanic about a 1/4 of a mile from house. So things are going a little better today.

Well the mechanic said $1650 to pull it, repair it, and re-install it. $1100 if I bring in just the tranny and they repair it. Then I would have to re-install it.

What other subaru makes bolt up to the SVX? I need to know how complicated this thing is to remove. Does the exhaust have to be removed? Are there alot of hoses and wires or is it pretty standard bolt up.

I need some details on removing this thing ..... im gonna go browse the how-to docs.

Well I did the code test and it just sits there and blinks every 1/4 sec. So I guess that checks out as normal

I had saved this information from some old thread. Hope it helps.

INTERCHANGEABLE TRANSMISSION:
95-96-97-& Early 98 Legacy Outback/Legacy GT/Legacy LSI/Forester/Impreza 2.5 RS with 4EAT automatic transmission, and 2.5 engine.
Get the transmission that DOES NOT HAVE the spin on transmission filter located on the drivers side, behind the bellhousing, above the left front corner of the transmission oil pan.

Change to 4.11 or 4.44 rear end with limited slip to match transmission.

NOTE, if you are just upgrading as a mod, use your SVX torque converter.
If your transmission is bad, then your SVX torque converter is probably contaminated, and you can use an 96-98 Legacy Outback torque converter.
They have been used successfully in the past.
DO NOT USE an Impreza torque converter! (unless it came from a 2.5 RS)
It is probably far to small for SVX HP levels.

Luckly I found a $500 dollar solution. Sorry about the size of the photos. Man this car runs great. Nothing like the luxury of the SVX but parts sure are cheap.

So what happened to the SVX!? That's actually a very cheap quote you were given for that transmission job, dude!
