5mt FWD?
It seems to me this could be the 'sportiest' SVX that could possibly be made, with out the added weight of the 4EAT OR the AWD system, it'd be a light sporty throwaround 'fun' car instead of a heavy grand tourer. plus a fwd fetches a lower price on the market, so it wouldnt be more than 2k to pick one up
Are there any subaru transmissions for a fwd manual that could be swapped into this idea?

FWD for the loss though - no traction.

Would be great for smoke-shows though.

It'd be great for torque steer too....
But yeah, it's do-able... Like stated, The Legacy's and Impreza's up to 95 were available with a FWD 5-speed that will bolt up to the EG33

I'm very interested in this. Has anyone ever actually mated a FWD 5spd to the EG33? Anyone know how much power these trannies can take? How about if there is an LSD available for it?

i don't think an lsd would be enough, fwd would be a great burnout machine, end of story

Has anyone figured out (roughly) how much would be saved with a 5MT-FWD set up? I gather the FWD (available on the 94/95 models) saved about 300lbs?
How much has the 5MT saved over the 4EAT tranny? Could adding those two figures together be a valid number, or are there other issues involved that would effect the weight (like needing a heavier front diff)?

The AWD Manual Tranny is roughly 100 pounds lighter than a AWD 4EAT...

There aren't a whole lot of 5 speed fwders out there that will work. The early Imps fwders 93-95 have a different imput staft spline count and actually use the clutch from a EA-82. Not gonna do a whole lot for holding 2x the power. FWD Legacy trannies should work but keep in mind the fwd subie tranny is pretty much the same as the fwd EA-71 I.E. 1976 1600 DL fwd tranny. Not something I'd trust with a 230hp engine too long. Esp considering one that you would get would likely have 100k+ miles on it already as it will be at least 12 years old.
When I put a 5 fwd speed ea-82 turbo tranny in my XT6 I'd suspect it weighted about 30-50lbs less than a 5 speed awd from a legacy. If you're really out for a lightened SVX there are much better ways to loose an extra 300lbs and as far as sportiness having driven an awd, fwd, rwd in varing forms of 5 speed or awd I must say the rwd version was the most intriguing. |

If anyone would like to experiment and kindly toss a manual FWD tranny into my car you're welcomed to.

Why would I want to ride in one when I've already driven one. Granted it was a rwd auto but still intriguing non the less. I'd suspect that we might be moving that direction with the hill climber in the next couple of years. Just depends how things pan out.

Maybe I'm wierd, but I think that a Subie without AWD is like socks with sandals. You can do it, but it ain't right.

Then again ther was a time that Subarus were economical and built to stay that way... Sadly today you can buy an awd Bmmer for the same money as a WRX. |
