Transmision Shift Delayed when cold
Hi. I'm going to look at 92 SVX with 238 kilometres (About 137,ooo miles to you yanks). Talked to the owner over the phone and he mentioned that when the car was cold the transmission would stay down in first a bit longer than he liked. Is this normal or is this a first sign of transmission trouble. Transmission was rebuilt around the 180 Km mark.
Anything else I should look for when I go look at the car. Thanks |

How cold are we talking? If we're talking sub 40-50 degrees, I would accept that as normal operation.

The transmission will not shift into 4th gear until it reaches 10°C/50°F and will not lock up the torque converter until it reaches 65°C/150°F.
Shifting from 1-2 and 2-3 is not affected by temperature. but it could be related to the throttle position sensor (TPS) and/or the band brake.

If it is cold enough outside and i jump in my car and start driving without letting it warm up for the first minute or so or driving all the shifts will be a little bit higher, not much at all probably ~200 RPMs. But this quickly evens out when the engine gets warmer.

Thanks for all of the replies. First of all it doesn't get that frickin cold in Canada unless you live near the north pole.
I think Sharkey may be on the right track in that it might be emission related. I know some manufacturers delay upshifts in automatios when the car is warming up to get it faster up to normal operating temp for emission purposes. I suspect this might be the issue. I'll find out tommorrow when I go check out the car. |

The A/T I have in the SVX is always slow to shift out of first gear when it's cold out, 20F or so. I think it is because the AFT is thicker.
