ok 93 octane

i've been using regular unleaded but i'll try the premium and see if there's a difference next time.

You will either need to reset the computer or else run through a few tanks before noticing a difference between regular and premium fuel.

Is it possible the O2 sensors could be flaky enough to affect gas mileage without throwing a code? I seem to be averaging under 20mpg on mixed driving with only a moderately heavy right foot. The engine is relatively young [~25k], but the O2 sensors likely have the same 140k miles that the rest of the car does. Assuming the mechanic who did the engine swap didn't screw up the spark plugs or something like that [he did forget to connect the steering speed sensor and tell me it was probably a bad rack ], is there anything else that would adversely affect mileage?

In my '95 I consistently get 21-22mpg all city driving and 30mpg highway (i could have got more because i was playing around and averaged well over the posted speed limit )

Last time I checked in the '92 I got like 12-13mpg (damn sparkplug coils!!!)

premium in anchorage is about 2.39 at costco

i ran a tank of regular into my svx a couple of years ago by mistake.

the car ran so bad that i mixed in premium at a little over half a tank.

there may be villages in alaska that don't have premium or even gas stations
i haven't noticed any with connecting roads.

if i remember correctly the octaine level is between 90 and maybe 92

i think closer to 90.

i got 450 approx miles on my last tank, all highway. although my cruising was "just a little bit" over 80
thats premium with octane booster applied....

so 16 gallon tank that equals... about 28 mpg!

soooooo rule of thumb: haulin arse is the way to save petrol. AS LOnG AS you are CONSTANTLY haulin arse, keeping the revs constant

I usually alternate between 89 & 93 octane (since the owners manual specifies 91 & it's not sold here in the northeast). In the city I usually average 14mpg (though have been as low as 10mpg), highway time I get as high as 28mpg.

Unless you have the Stage1 chip installed and wired for the 87 mode (and switched into it), you shouldn't be running regular gas to begin with (unless it's an emergency) as the car is tuned for premium.
