EGR, where is exhaust gas pickup?

Where the SVX EGR system pickup the exhaust gas that it recirculates? Does it take if from from one of the exhaust manifolds or is there a port on one of the cylinderheads?

i am not sure whther that port recirulates or picks up. I would image it just recirculates there. Port in the head would make much more sense.

Doesn't look like anything comes from the heads, it picks up from the exhaust there and goes through the EGR valve before being sent into the engine through the intake manifold. Unless I am missing something. I have an engine in the garage that I can take pics of if you need it.

Nope you're right Matt. I've taken my EGR pipe off twice - the gas definitely comes from the exhaust manifold, not the heads.

Thanks. I realized the other day that I didn't know much about the EGR system on the SVX. So when the exhaust manifold comes off, the EGR pipe has to be disconnected?

I could use a pic if you're up to it. I need to change either the valve or solenoid and the system is an enigma to me. Could you point out which is which?

Yes - you can disconnect it from the exhaust or you can disconnect the pipe from the engine. In both cases you will probably strip or shear off the bolts

Note the pipes are removed in this pic. You can see just how caked up with black sooty crud that they get. I would bet most EGR problems are from this crud. The one labeled "to intake" has a pipe that goes straight up and connects with the intake manifold in the passenger side rear. The one labeled "exhaust" has a pipe that goes straight down to the passenger side exhaust manifold. You can see that the tiny 10mm (or was it 8mm?) bolts shear right off of these suckers. I think they were the only bolts that sheared in the entire removal of my engine. I couldn't budge the one that attaches the EGR pipe to the exhaust manifold even after soaking in PB blaster.

Thanks for the pic. I'm hoping to do some general maintenance on the motor this summer, and EGR is one thing I want to look at.

Thanks Immortal, that sheds light on some things. I hope I san change the EGR without removing the pipes?

Were you able to remove the EGR without disconnecting the pipes? How did you do it? I'd like to pull mine and try cleaning everything.

In the pic you have a valve labeled as the EGR solenoid....I just replaced that piece, and when I checked to see what it was on Subaruparts and it was labeled as the backpressure valve. My car was running like poop and was sucking in air on the passenger side exhuast. Replaced sparks, FPR, MAS, TPS, coilpacks...then went to the BPV and what do you know it runs great now. The return line going into the head? was almost completely clogged with soot. Luckly I have another SVX that I pulled everything off of.

what do you mean by "running like poop"? I'm wondering if it's at all similar to my problem. I've replaced all that stuff too with no change in performance. I'm about to try working on the EGR stuff.

FYI
Use a torch to heat the EGR fitting into the passenger's side exhaust manifold. I soaked mine in PB blaster for a couple of days with no luck....Tom (SVXFiles) took a torch to it and it came right out.
