Stock radio and CD-Rs...
I know I've read a ton of threads where people state the stock CD player has issues reading CD-Rs, I'm just curious if there is anyone here who doesn't have an issue with them on the stock CD player and if so, what brand do you use?
Thanks

I used to just buy what ever had the most favorable $ to # ratio
Don't recall ever having an issue... and I kept my CDs in the door handle yes, they get ugly fast that way. cheap cds played pretty good, even when they looked like a clutch disc maybe their/your lens just needs to be cleaned or is nicked badly I only had the stocker for 2 years though

One car has no prob with cd-r and the other one doesn't 'see' anything that is not store bought. Both radios are stock equipment.

To answer your question Clint, I have had problems in some of my cars with CD-R's especially when the head unit has not been cleaned or rebuilt. I have found that a WRX 6 CD changer is a great OEM upgrade at a low price.

My stock player in my 94 will play some but not others. Sometimes it will spit them out but if I put them in a few times it will eventually take it. I have also noticed that if the CD is cold it will not take it but if I warm it up a little it will take it.
But while we are on this topic. I have been contemplating getting a a multidisc add-on for the trunk so that I can put a number of cds that play mp3s but still keep the stock radio. Is anyone using these units and what are the pros and cons of using these vs putting in a new head unit???? thanks Vic

When I had the 92 I didn't have any problems playing them other than the fact that it skipped like a mother f'er all the time. It was a combination of the crappy roads, crazy driving, and the age of the player though.

The panasonic 12 disc unit on euro and jdm models works fine with CD-Rs. It skips a lot though, even on original CDs.

The cd player in your car likes CLEAN memorex cd's, though ocasionally when skipping over tracks, it wont find them. I genrally make a GOOD cd and let it play all the way through. no issues...Also, might wanna carry around some Plast-x to clean cd's with. Ive used it on disks that wouldnt play in a NORMAL cd player let alone the 15 year old stocker, and got them to work just fine in the car

Must be an early 90s car thing, the stock unit in my Cressida is very persnickety even with store-bought CDs, same with the unit in the SVX... Maybe I should try my lens cleaner CD...

I think I still have the original head units sitting around in my garage. If anyone wants it they can have it for the cost of shipping.

The stock CD player in my teal wouldn't track much of anything when I got the car, but the stock replacement I bought from a member here has been rock solid for years, and the vast majority of the discs I play are dollar-a-dozen CD-Rs. I figure it must have come from a low-mileage donor.
The silver is much more finicky and even mistracks during hard cornering. Once it sorts itself out and starts playing it'll usually stick with it unless I start track searching. I'd like to know what the person who determined the placement of the control buttons on this thing was thinking. dcb |
